Terry (Steve Guttenberg) is having an affair with his boss' wife Sylvia (Isabelle Huppert). One night after an office party, they are together and Sylvia witnesses an attack on Denise (Elizabeth McGovern) from Terry's bedroom window. She doesn't want to expose their relationship and so is reluctant to talk to the police. Terry, wanting to help, gives the police the description of the attacker. He soon becomes the main prosecution witness until it becomes clear he cannot have witnessed the assault, at which point he becomes the main suspect in the case. He then sets out to find the real rapist/killer with some help from Denise.

The film tells the story of heiress Fisher Willow (Bryce Dallas Howard). Fisher returns home from overseas to find that her father has become a hated man in Memphis as he had intentionally blown up the southern half of his levee earlier that year, resulting in the deaths of 8-9 people and enormous property damage for anyone downstream. Tommy, un petit garçon de 10 ans, vit avec Betty, sa maman, dans une ferme d’apiculture en pleine nature, loin de Montréal. Tommy n’a jamais connu son père et Betty, qui semble s’être retirée là pour fuir quelque chose, cherche vainement un compagnon sur les sites de rencontre. Mais des problèmes administratifs font que le chapiteau n’a pas l’autorisation d’être planté et que, très vite, le cirque sera contraint de déguerpir. Une idée germe alors dans la tête de Tommy. Quoi de mieux qu’un cirque pour créer une ambiance de fête et de joie ? Il déploie alors tous ses arguments et parvient à convaincre sa mère d’offrir l’hospitalité au cirque, lequel vient donc s’installer dans le vaste champ face à la maison.
