Beginning with an idiom resembling the mythological, the film transforms into a domestic family drama while maintaining its allegiance to folk legends about female village deities. The big-budget hit was a major box office success and was noted for its special effects and its soundtrack, which used folk tunes and established the newcomer Soundarya as a major star. The Tamil dubbed version entitled Amman was also a hit. Ramya Krishna played the role of village Goddess Ammoru, while Soundarya portrayed Bhavani, her devotee.

Padayappa is an engineer who returns to his village from Chennai to attend his sister's wedding. His sister is engaged to their maternal uncle's son Suryaprakash. During his stay, he comes across Vasundhara, and falls in love with her. However, shyness and fear of Neelambari, her landlady, prevents Vasundhara from initially expressing her feelings. Misro (Charan Raj) is a dacoit SP Chakravarthy (Sarath Babu) arrests him. Misro wounds himself and is taken to hospital for cure, where Chakravarthy is waiting for his wife Geeta (Sangeetha) who is on labor and she gives birth to twins and the doctor says that both children have reflection mentality, that means "if it pains to one other also hurts" depending on distance. Misro escapes and takes one of the twins with him, hurting Geeta. Chakravarthy goes behind him, but he could not find the child but shoots Misro. The child was taken by a lady who works as a daily labor with her husband. They have a daughter and one day in an accident at construction place were killed. The two children become orphans and they grew up, but the brother Deva (Nagarjuna) with his friend Kaasi another orphan (Brahmanandam) become thieves for earning. On the other hand, Geetha goes into coma and Chakravarthy takes her to America for the cure, where another twin Ravi Varma (also Nagarjuna) is brought up. He returns India as a rock start to give performances here. He is received by Giribabu (Chakravarthy's friend) who wishes to give his daughter Manga (Ramya Krishna) to him. But Ramya is in love with Deva. In the airport, he sees Ooha (Soundarya) daughter of Akkamanba (Annapurna) who is organizing his public performances and falls in love with her. Simhachalam (Srihari) who is Akkamanba's brother also wishes to marry Ooha. Meanwhile at home Manga advances with him thinking he is Deva only. One day in a restaurant they see each other and find that they are identical which leads to hilarious misunderstandings.

The character 'Kuttichathan' is formed on the basis of the specialties of a deity popularly known as 'Chathan' who is being worshiped mainly in the south Indian state, Kerala. There are cruel magicians everywhere in the world. One of them is the Karimbhootham (black magician), who enslaved an invisible spirit with his magic spells, whom he calls Kuttichathan ("Little Ghost" in English and "Chhota Chetan" in Hindi). Two boys and a girl befriend Kuttichathan by accident and release him from the grip of the magician. They understand that this Chathan is friendly to kids and is a very good friend. Therefore, the girl promises to keep Kuttichathan in a house for two reasons: one, her father drinks too much, so she wants Chathan, who is a very good magician, to make him himself, as her mother has died, there is no one to control him; second, Chathan, being a small boy, also drinks a lot. He could drink all that her father drinks, thereby changing her father's attitude.

Le film commence dans le passé avec une mère et une fille chinoise. Elles semblent passer des moments heureux ensemble. On peut voir que la mère est enceinte d'un autre enfant. Le film passe au présent, où un couple heureux Krish (Siddharth) et Lakshmi (Andrea Jeremiah) font l'amour, en discutant de leurs souvenirs du temps ils se sont rencontrés et comment leur amour s'est épanouit. Ils découvrent soudainement qu'une famille déménage dans la maison d'en face. Krish est un neurochirurgien qui se spécialise dans la stimulation cérébrale pour guérir la maladie de parkinson. Il est proche d'un autre médecin, le Dr Prasad, qui est psychiatre. Les deux familles s'entendent bien. Jenny, la fille aînée apprécie beaucoup Krish. Tout va bien, quand soudain, au cours d'un dîner, Krish voit Jenny de sauter un puits, il saute dans le puits et la sauve. Cette même nuit, Jenny est attaqué à des convulsions et une fois de plus, Krish la sauve dans le temps. Les personnes dans la maison commence à remarquer des choses étranges. Lors d'un autre dîner dans la maison de Krish, Jenny a de nouvelles paniques en voyant un visage et ses parents la ramène de force à la maison. Son père l'emmène voir un psychiatre et elle révèle deux choses qu'elle pensait anormales: une voix lui parle en Chinois et un autre incident s'est passé dans les toilettes. Le psychiatre sent que quelque chose va mal et va visiter sa chambre, avec la permission de son père, qui la fait sortir. Le psychiatre avec Krish et son père, font un nouveau test qui les conduit à découvrir que Jenny est possédée par une femme Chinoise. Les trois planifient de faire faux exorcisme avec l'aide du Père Joshua, dans le but de faire partir l'esprit. Cela se passe mal, l'esprit se défend et le prêtre blessé est admis à l'hôpital.
