Synopsis
L'Algérie en 1989 : peu de temps après les émeutes d'octobre 1988, la vie quotidienne est dure dans le quartier de Bab El Oued à Alger. Boualem arrache, sur son immeuble, un haut-parleur diffusant la parole de l'imam, car cela l'empêchait de dormir (il travaille de nuit). Les intégristes islamistes saisissent ce prétexte pour répandre la terreur. Ainsi, ils prennent à partie Ouardya, une femme aux mœurs jugées trop libres.Actors

Réda (Nicolas Cazalé) is a French-Moroccan teenager due to sit for Baccalauréat. When his devout father (played by Mohamed Majd) asks Réda to accompany him on a pilgrimage to Mecca, he reluctantly agrees. However, the father insists that they travel by car. As both embark on a road trip thousands of kilometres away from southern France, the once-icy father-and-son relationship starts to thaw as both gradually come to know each other. Réda speaks only in French to his father, who is seen speaking only Arabic for the majority of the film. Later, when necessary, the father proves that he in fact speaks impeccable French; his choice to speak only Arabic to his son is therefore purposeful.

A group of radicalised young British Muslim men aspire to be suicide bombers. They are Omar (Riz Ahmed), who is deeply critical of Western society and imperialism; his dim-witted friend, Waj (Kayvan Novak); Barry (Nigel Lindsay), a bad-tempered and extremely rash white convert to Islam; and the naive Faisal (Adeel Akhtar), who tries to train crows to be used as bombers. The visit to the training camp ends in disaster, with Omar misfiring a rocket backwards that kills fellow jihadists; however, he uses the experience to assert authority on his return to Britain.

Hiver 1995. Une grève générale des transports paralyse, depuis sept jours, Paris et ses environs. Emmitouflée dans un duffel-coat rouge, Anne, employée au tri postal, se rend à bicyclette à son travail. À quelques coups de pédales, Patrice, patron d'une blanchisserie industrielle, protégé par un masque des gaz d'échappement. Arrêtés côte à côte à un feu rouge, les deux cyclistes en herbe s'échangent un sourire amusé. À peine a-t-elle enfourché son vélo que la chaîne d'Anne déraille. Patrice freine précipitamment et fait montre de ses talents de bricoleur. En guise de remerciement, Anne lui offre un café dans son bistrot fétiche. Entre les deux, le courant passe… Le lendemain, Patrice, désireux de revoir sa belle inconnue, fait une halte au café. Anne, dont l'équipe a voté « le débrayage », est assise au comptoir. Patrice, qui s'apprête à livrer des draps dans un hôtel voisin, lui propose de l'accompagner. Attirés l'un vers l'autre, ils s'embrassent fougueusement dans la buanderie avant de décider de prendre une chambre dans ce même établissement. Le lendemain, Anne prête ses clés à Fabien, un collègue épuisé par ses trajets domicile-travail. Dans l'appartement, Fabien se retrouve nez à nez avec Gérard, le mari d'Anne, baroudeur disparu sous les tropiques six mois plus tôt.
