Synopsis
In Paris, in about 1900, George Duroy, just returned from Morocco, spends a night with the singer Rachel, who is rehearsing the song Bel Ami. Later at a party he tells the newspaper editor Forestier about Morocco. At the request of the ladies present Duroy is engaged by Walter, proprietor of La Vie Française, as a journalist.Actors

Marina est une prostituée dont la vie est assez difficile. Son beau-père est arrêté par la Gestapo, sa mère trompe son mari et elle-même tombe sous le charme de son demi-frère. Par la suite elle assiste à l'assassinat de sa meilleure amie. Elle tombe alors amoureuse d'un peintre qui, malheureusement, est gravement malade : il a une tumeur au cerveau. Pour financer les frais de l'opération, Marina se voit contrainte de reprendre son ancien « travail ». Les deux amoureux partent alors pour l'Italie, où ils trouvent de quoi se divertir et se détendre. Finalement l'opération a lieu mais n'apportera pas de guérison définitive. Ils retournent en Autriche et passent quelques jours à Vienne. Marine aidera ensuite son ami, devenu aveugle, à mourir à l'aide de somnifères, car ses souffrances sont telles qu'il ne peut plus les supporter. Après cela, elle se suicide à son tour.

Le jeune compositeur Franz Schubert doit mettre sa guitare en gage pour payer son loyer. Emmy, la fille du prêteur en gage, est si séduite par son allure simple et amicale qu'elle lui fait payer un montant plus élevé que l'instrument. Bientôt les deux jeunes gens se rapprochent. Quand le Viennois présente sa symphonie inachevée, au cours de son exécution, il lui vient soudainement à l'esprit plusieurs fins possibles qu'il présente dans sa ferveur immature. Le public se met à rire, Schubert est en colère et quitte la soirée.

The film is set in Viennese high society of about 1900. After a masked carnival ball, Gerda Harrandt (Hilde von Stolz), wife of the surgeon Carl Ludwig Harrandt (Peter Petersen), allows the fashionable artist Ferdinand von Heidenick (Adolf Wohlbrück) to paint a portrait of her wearing only a mask and a muff. This muff however belongs to Anita Keller (Olga Tschechowa), in secret the painter's lover but also the fiancée of the court orchestra director Paul Harrandt (Walter Janssen), the brother of Gerda's husband.
