Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (ou simplement Bandersnatch) est un film interactif de science-fiction sorti en 2018 et adapté de la série d'anthologie Black Mirror. Écrit par le scénariste de la série Charlie Brooker et réalisé par David Slade, ce film est sorti sur Netflix le 28 décembre 2018.

Dans Bandersnatch, les téléspectateurs peuvent prendre des décisions pour le personnage principal, le jeune programmeur Stefan Butler (Fionn Whitehead), qui adapte un roman de fantasy dans un jeu vidéo en 1984 (référence au roman 1984 et son célèbre « Big Brother vous observe »). Mais nous suivons en réalité la vie d'un jeune homme qui se fait manipuler et retourner le cerveau via les nouvelles technologies. Le film est basé sur un projet de jeu vidéo du même nom développé par la société Imagine Software, qui ne sera jamais terminé après la faillite de la société.

Brooker et Annabel Jones, productrice déléguée, ont été approchés par Netflix afin de faire un film interactif pour le mois de mai 2017. La difficulté dans l'écriture non linéaire du script a conduit à la création d'une succursale sur mesure pour le projet, afin notamment d'optimiser l'utilisation de la mémoire tampon. Le tournage et la production ont pris plus de temps qu'un épisode classique de Black Mirror.

Synopsis

Bandersnatch est présenté comme un film interactif. Un bref tutoriel, spécifique à l'appareil du spectateur, explique à ce dernier comment faire des choix. Il a ainsi dix secondes pour prendre une décision, ou par défaut une décision sera prise à sa place. Une fois une « partie » terminée, le spectateur a la possibilité de revenir en arrière et de faire un choix différent. La moyenne de visionnage est de 90 minutes, même si le chemin le plus rapide permet un visionnage de 40 minutes. Il y a 150 minutes de film divisé en 250 segments. IGN rapporte que selon Netflix, il y a cinq « grandes » fins, avec des variantes à l'intérieur de ces dernières. Quand le spectateur a atteint une de ces fins, le film interactif donne au joueur la possibilité de refaire un dernier choix crucial afin d'être en mesure d'explorer d'autres segments. Dans certains cas, le spectateur peut atteindre le même segment de plusieurs façons.

Little does he know that the online game he plays is actually part of a sophisticated piece of U.S. government spyware designed to find potential terrorists based on how well they perform and bet on the games. The spyware program is run by a new, advanced artificial intelligence system called R.I.P.L.E.Y. (an acronym that is not explained in the film, nor by its makers), which has ultimate control over every American electronic system in order to combat terrorism.

A year after the events of Extinction, the Alice clones (Milla Jovovich) attempt to kill Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) at the current Umbrella Headquarters, Tokyo. In the Southeast Asian nation of Shadaloo City, civil war has erupted between the forces of crazed military dictator General M. Bison (Raul Julia) and the Allied Nations, a multinational military force, led by their regional commander, Colonel William F. Guile.
