Chandra Mukhi, along with Chaand Kaa Tukdaa, created huge expectation as, Salman Khan and Sridevi paired together. Although Chaand Kaa Tukdaa is Salman-Sridevi team's first signed film, their first release was Chandra Mukhi. The story Idea was written by Salman Khan. The film resembled 1990 Telugu supernatural-fantasy film, Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari.

Following the events in Nagina, Nigahen is the story of Neelam, the daughter of Rajiv and Rajni. After the tragic car accident of her parents, Neelam is raised by her grandfather in the city and is finally brought back to her ancestral home in the country, as a young adult (who bears a striking resemblance to her mother, also played by Sridevi). There, she encounters and falls in love with Anand who as a child was kidnapped by Gorakh Nath, a powerful Tantrik. Claiming to have amnesia of the events, Anand woos Neelam and she falls in love with him. Little does Neelam know that Anand does not have amnesia and is working for Gorakh Nath: the Tantrik has set his eyes on a powerful gem (Mani), which grants the one who possesses it great powers. The only person who knows its whereabouts is Neelam, who unbeknown to her, was hypnotized by her late mother's Guardian Snakes into going to the old temple from the original story, and locating the gem (an event witnessed by Gorakh Nath).

Movie starts with 25th anniversary of Mamta (Reema Lagoo) and Ramkishan's (Alok Nath) . They have 3 sons Vivek (Mohnish Behl) who is Mamta's stepson and disabled in one hand, because of a childhood accident, in which he had saved his brothers Prem (Salman Khan) and Vinod (Saif Ali Khan). This disability tends to put off most marriageable girls. Businessman Adarsh (Rajeev Verma) and his daughter Sadhna (Tabu) attends family function and gets impressed by the warmth and solidarity of Vivek and his family. This leads to a marriage between Vivek and Sadhna.

Bombay City lives in fear of a notorious thief who calls himself Chindi Chor (Gulshan Grover), and steals whenever and whatever he desires without any regard to security, and police protection. When Ghoshal (Ashish Vidyarthi) announces the exhibition and subsequent auction of Emperor Babushah (also played by Gulshan Grover)'s crown, Chindi challenges him that he is going to steal this priceless crown, and Ghosal accepts the challenge, and hires private security guards. Chindi carries out the theft, and two of the security guards, Vikram (Mohammad Iqbal Khan) and Ajay (Anuj Sawhney), and an accomplice, John D'Souza (Paresh Rawal), become prime suspects, and are on the run. They must apprehend Chindi and recover the crown to absolve themselves of this crime. While being chased by security guards, the trio crash into a wall, and are transported back to the 10th century, straight into the palace of Emperor Babushah himself. The trio think they are on the sets of a Bollywood movie, and take nothing seriously, until they are imprisoned. It is then the hapless trio realize that they must not only escape, but must also take the crown, back with them to the 21st century to absolve themselves of this crime. They do realize that only a miracle can get them back to the 21st century.

Vijay Saxena lives a middle-class lifestyle along with his college-going sister, Sweety, in a small town in India. He gets a job as a Professor at the City College, where he meets with Sweety's friend, Sudha Verma, and both fall in love with each other. When a student, Adhikari, attempts to molest Sudha, Vijay comes to her rescue, only to subsequently apologize to Adhikari when Sudha retracts her testimony and ends up blaming Vijay for molesting her. Later Vijay finds out that Adhikari and some goons had threatened to harm Sudha's younger sister, and the duo resume their romance. With the help of Inspector Arjun Singh, Vijay is able to get Kalicharan, the son of gangster don, Natwarlal, arrested and held in a cell much to the chagrin of Natwarlal. Arjun gets killed, Sweety witnesses his death, and takes Inspector Arvind Phadke to the murder scene, but Arjun's body is missing. Subsequently Sweety is molested and killed. Inspector Arvind Phadke arrests Vijay for molesting his sister. Watch what happens during the trial amidst Vijay's pleas that he is not guilty of this heinous crime.

Nisha lives a very wealthy lifestyle in Neelgaon, India, with her businessman dad, Sardar Roop Singh. She is now of marriageable age, and her dad wants her to marry his friend's son, Sohan, but Nisha dislikes him. While traveling to Darjeeling with a dance troupe, she meets with her dad's business associates' son, Popat Lal, and after a few misadventures, both fall in love with each other. She takes him to meet her dad where he can also finalize his business transaction, but when Roop comes inside, he finds that Popat has disappeared, and in his place is another man claiming to be the real Popat. She does meet with Popat, who tells her that his real name is Sunder and both had been promised to each other by their respective parents, but Roop had subsequently changed his mind. When the marriage is to take place, a man named Khanna comes over and tells Nisha that Sunder is already married to woman named Shanti, who he subsequently killed, and had been the primary accused in this case by the police. Maan Singh and the honest Prithvi Singh are engaged in a legal property dispute. When the Court gives verdict in Prithvi's favor, Maan Singh, in a fit of rage, hires a renowned bandit, Panna Singh, to eliminate Prithvi's entire family.
