Synopsis
Tolemainen, le président d'un pays au nord de l'Europe, veut passer les derniers jours avant l'élection dans sa résidence secondaire dans un bois. Dans le voisinage immédiat, il y a de grandes mines, où les travailleurs vivent dans un baraquement. Ici vient Rikola, un membre connu de l'opposition au président ; il rencontre Gawan, un ami qui travaille dans la mine. Comme ils tiennent Tolemainen pour un ennemi du peuple, ils décident de s'en prendre à lui, sans prévenir le groupe. Ils préparent vite une agression. Ils coupent un arbre qui bloque le pont au-dessus du torrent. Ils se cachent et voient les voitures s'arrêter.Actors

À la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Eva Berger a fui les territoires à l'est de l'Allemagne pour l'ouest. Elle travaille maintenant comme figurante au cinéma. Le réalisateur Frank Tornau la remarque et lui fait passer des essais. Eva raconte alors l'histoire de sa vie. Tornau trouve là la matière pour un film. Son auteur Paul écrit un scénario et pense que Mona Arendt sera la vedette du film. Tornau souhaite qu'Eva reprenne son propre rôle. Stefan, l'époux d'Eva, s'oppose à la réalisation de ce film. De plus, il se rend compte de l'histoire d'amour qui naît entre Eva et Tornau. Le tournage s'avère une torture pour Eva qui revit son passé. Au cours de la dernière scène, alors qu'elle s'est séparée de son mari blessé, elle fait une dépression nerveuse. Cependant elle se rapproche de Stefan avec lequel elle se réconcilie.

The King (Jean Marais) promises his dying Queen that after her death he will only marry a woman as beautiful and virtuous as she. Pressed by his advisers to remarry and produce an heir, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to fulfil his promise is to marry his own daughter, the Princess (Catherine Deneuve). Following the advice of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy (Delphine Seyrig), the Princess demands a series of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts, in the hope that her father will be forced to give up his plans of marriage. However, the King succeeds in providing her with dresses the colour of the weather, of the moon and of the sun, and finally with the skin of a magic donkey that excretes jewels, the source of his kingdom's wealth. Donning the donkey skin, the Princess flees her father's kingdom to avoid the incestuous marriage.

In 1865, the proletarian General Gurko Lanen becomes the behind the scenes dictator of the Grand Duchy of Lichtenburg located in the Balkans.
