Dharm Aur Qanoon is a 1984 film starring Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Vinod Mehra, Asha Parekh and Danny Denzongpa, with Jaya Prada, Supriya Pathak, Manmohan Krishna, Ifthekar and Om Shivpuri the supporting roles. It had box office collection of 6.5 crores in 1984 and went on to become a moderate hit at the Indian boxoffice. The film was remade in Tamil that same year as Ezhuthatha Sattangal ('Unwritten Laws').

Synopsis

Justice Diwan lives in a bungalow with his wife, Sharda, and a son named Rajan. Diwan was a very famous advocate in his younger days and today has become a name to reckon with. His admirers include the superintendent of police Kader whom he knows since his younger days. Diwan has been appointed as the judge in the court. Diwan’s wife Shanta considers Rahim Khan as her brother. Rahim visits Diwan’s house daily to give her flowers to wear and for presenting them to her house temple.

Major Ravi Mamman (Mammootty) arrests two LTTE terrorists in Bangalore, who are on a mission to assassinate the Indian prime minister on his visit to the city. On the run, he identifies the government minister K.K.Nair (Janardanan) as the main conspirator behind the assassination plot. Nair anticipates a political coup after the death of the prime minister, through which he hopes to seize power. However, Mamman's attempts foil his ambition. Nair tries to buy out Mamman, who refuses his offers. In an attempt to save himself, Nair shoots Ravi Mamman, but the bullet accidentally hits Susan, Mamman's girlfriend, who dies on the spot. Nair fabricates a criminal case against Ravi Mamman, of killing Susan. Ravi is court-marshalled and sent to jail. Upon release, Ravi leaves to Dubai, where he emerges as a successful businessman in a short time. His business empire is spread all over the Middle-East. He is assisted by Chandran Nair (N. F. Varghese), an over-enthusiastic NRI. Ravi's sudden acquisition of power and influence makes him an enemy of many who are eagerly waiting for a chance to finish him off.

Ex-underworld don Zakkir Ali Hussein (Mohanlal), after giving up violence, is settled peacefully in the suburbs of Kochi. It was under the strong influence of his foster father, Bappu Haji Mustafa (Anupam Kher), that he left Mumbai. An unsuccessful assassination attempt on Haji Mustafa in Mumbai by Raman Naik, an underworld don ignites old wounds in Zakir. He, despite repeated pleas from Haji Mustafa and Ilanthaloor Rama Varma (Babu Namboothiri), a father like figure, sets out to Mumbai along with his trusted lieutenant Hamid Plavilakandi Mather, alias Malayalees (Cochin Haneefa). With the help of his friend Arjun (Biju Menon), Zakeer kills down Raman Naik and reaches back in Kochi. On his way back, at Kochi, he meets up with Maya Mary Kurien (Aishwarya), Asst. Commissioner of Police, who slowly starts developing a crush on him. Zakir Hussein is visited by Balaraman (Shammi Thilakan), a liquor baron and ex-MP, who warns Zakkir of dire consequences if he continues to interfere in the Mumbai crime world. He also attempts to woo Zakir, but the latter refuses to bow down, sending strong warning to Balaraman and his group. Balaraman, along with Devadevan Nambiar, alias DD (Vijayaraghavan), and Arun Naik, the brother of Raman Naik in Mumbai, is planning to finish off Zakir Hussein and Haji Mustafa to regain the lost turf in Mumbai. They are supported by Lahayil Vakkachan (N. F. Varghese), the tainted state home minister. Joseph Madachery, the IG of police conducts a raid at Haji Mustafa's poor home on behalf of Vakachan, and beats up Rama Varma Thirumulpad brutally, but the sudden arrival of Zakir saves him. Joseph is severely beaten by Zakir in full public presence, which infuriates Balaraman and DD, who try to demoralize Zakir by publishing fabricated stories about his relationship with ACP Maya Kurein and inmates of Haji Mustafa's poor home. Lahayil Vakachan tries to create a truce between Zakir and Balaraman, but fails miserably. This leads to a series of problems, including the arrest of Jaganathan, a close buddy of Zakir, on false narcotic drug charges. Jaganathan is killed in police custody. Balaraman and DD kill Rama Varma Thirumulpad, which prompts Zakir to take the law in his own hands. At a public gathering while addressing thousands of party workers, Zakir Hussein enters by duping police and kills Balaraman, DD and Lahayil Vakkachan.

Following his father's death, Puramanayil Chandran (Mohanlal) was forced leave for Abu Dhabi to amortise all his father's debts. The film commences with his mother, Lakshmi (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), faking an illness to persuade Chandran to come back to India to get him married. Chandran takes care of his big family including his mother and younger brothers. During his vacation in India, Chandran has an excellent time with his family. However, Chandran's marriage doesn't take place because a suitable bride couldn't be found. Depressed by this, Chandran decides to go back to Abu Dhabi. On his way to the airport, Chandran sees his childhood friend Indira (Shobhana). Chandran's quest to meet Indira becomes unsuccessful and he decides to cancel his trip to Abu Dhabi.

The film begins when Gopika (Kavya Madhavan) and her father(Oduvil Unnikrishnan) came to stay in a house where Bharathiyamma(Kaviyoor Ponnamma) stays with her two children Balu Damodar (Indrajith) and Ambili(Suja Karthika). Bharathiyamma has one more son Unni Damodar(Dileep) who is working in Dubai. Unni tells his family that he is working in Gulf but in reality he runs illegal spirit business with Bhai (Murali) along with Achayan and Achuvettan in Walayar. He accepts a four-year jail punishment actually the accused was Bhai. Unni, however confesses what he does, to Gopika whom his mother is insistent that he should marry. After leaving the jail Paramasivam(Unni) realizes that Bhai has been fall into a big debt because of the cheating of Chinnadan (Kalasala Babu) and his Sons. He then again goes to valayar and thus saves Bhai and his family from debt with his wicked mind and tricks. He again rules spirit deals in Valayar area pulling the Chinnadans into trouble. Things change when Unni's brother (Indrajith) becomes a police officer. He got posting in Valayar area, where Unni and Bhai have become big-time rowdys. In Valayar, Balu tries his level best to catch Valayar Paramasivam (Dileep) but does not know that it is his brother; and fails in mind game played by Dileep. This makes Bhai angry with Balu. But Paramasivam tells him to forgive Balu because he was his brother. In the meantime, Chinadan kills Bhai's only son Johny and blames Balu as the real killer. This made Bhai very desperate and wants to kill Balu. Bhai kidnaps him. On knowing this, Paramasivam goes to save his brother Balu and informs Bhai that the actual killer was CI (Shammi Thilakan) by identifying the ring marks in Johny's face. Paramasivam then confesses him that he will not lie to his bhai.

The story begins on the eve of the wedding of David John Kottarathil (Mammooty) and Sara Eapen (Vimala Raman). The two were childhood sweethearts, both hailing from rich planter families in the small but affluent town of Kottayam, Kerala. While both families are celebrating in their own homes, Sara's father Eapen (Riza Bava) is visibly disturbed. He has just received a phone call from Alice, his mistress, who is demanding public acknowledgement of their relationship. She wants to attend the wedding of David and Sara, as a means to achieve this. Eapen, who is a rich planter, is at risk of losing his good name in society, despite having generously provided for Aice and their daughter thus far. He offers to pay for her silence with a bigger bungalow and his estates in a far-away town of Chikmaglur. He requests John Kottarathil (Captain Raju), his best friend - whose son is set to marry Sara the next day - to accompany him while talking to his mistress. John requests the help of M C Paul (Vijayaraghavan), a rising politician and Eapen's brother-in-law to aid in the negotiation. The trio meet the mistress to discuss terms, but in a fit of rage, a drunk Eapen ends up shooting her. Eapen also tries to kill his illegitimate daughter, the nine year old Annie (Baby Niranjana/Mukta) but John stops him. In the struggle that follows, Eapen is also shot. John looks at Paul for assistance, but is met with a helpless silence.
