Kaimal and Susheela are leading a troubled married life. The latter is unsatisfied with the ignorance from her husband. Susheela, a mother of two children, indulges in a physical relation with a car mechanic named Giri. On an unfortunate day, she elopes with Giri to start a new life. After the incident, Kaimal is harassed by many of his friends and colleagues. Balan, a friend of Kaimal, helps him to get a relief. Balan tries to bring back Susheela, who was still having an unsatisfied life with Giri, to Kaimal's life. He arranges a meeting between Susheela and Kaimal in a beach. The film starts in 1796, four years after the occupation of Malabar by the English East India Company and towards the end of the First Pazhassi Revolt (1793–1797). The revolt is led by Kerala Varma (Mammootty), the Raja of Pazassi Palace, of Kottayam house. The exploitation of the native Indian resources by the Company had culminated in popular revolts against its authority across the district. With the help of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja's uncle Kurumbranadu ruler Veeravarma (Thilakan), who is jealous of Pazhassi Raja for his success and influence, and Raja's old companion Pazhayamveedan Chandhu (Suman), the Company act against Pazhassi Raja. This forces Pazhassi Raja to escape to the forests of Wayanad. The tribal force led by Neeli captures Assistant Collector Thomas Hervey Baber (Harry Key) and his fiancée Dora (Linda Arsenio) in the jungle, in spite of his commander's objection. The Raja treats Thomas Baber and Dora as his guest and releases them.

The film is set in 16th-century northern Kerala. The plot unfolds at Puthooram, the house of great Kannappan Chekavar (Balan K. Nair). Kannappan Chekavar adopts the son of his estranged sister when the boy loses both his parents and brings him to Puthooram to live and learn with his cousins. A henpecked politician wants his name attached to a new bridge, even if that means destroying another, perfectly serviceable bridge. This politician Dussasana Kuruppu (Bharath Gopi) is the president of the village. He along with his other members tries to demolish the bridge on advice of his fellow party member, his right hand and crooked mind Sikhandi Pillai (Nedumudi Venu). The opposition leader Ishak Tharakan (Thilakan) makes moves to thwart this and to capture the position of the village presidency. As a compromise step, both groups agree to relocate the bridge to a distant location so that not only a new bridge, a new road also will be needed to reach the bridge.The two tenders, one for bridge and one for road is given to two local contractors, one belongs to the ruling party and the other one supported by opposition. Ultimately the bridge is built and opened to public on the same day of the marriage of Dussasana Kurup's daughter and the Bridge contractor. The marriage function is attended by many including the minister of state for public works department and the entire people who came for marriage walks through the bridge causing it to collapse killing the crippled Kathorayan (Sreenivasan). The film ends by showing the broken bridge in the background.

The film's protagonist is Rahulan who loves three different women in different stages of his life. After his childhood love Thulasi commits suicide, Rahulan falls in love with his friend's sister Reena. She hails from an orthodox Christian family and Rahulan never has the courage to approach her father for a marriage proposal. After completing college, Rahulan gets a teacher job. He eventually falls in love with Meera, a rich student of his. Meera's family fixes her marriage with Rahulan. One night, Reena visits Rahulan in his house and at the same time Meera and her father also come and is shocked to see another woman with Rahulan. In the climax, Rahulan accepts Reena into his life. On the parallel, another romance story is also told, between Davis (Rahulan's friend and Reena's brother), and a nun.
