Balan K. Nair (4 April 1933 in Chemancheri, Kozhikode – 26 August 2000 in Thiruvananthapuram) was a Malayalam film actor. Even though he appeared in most films as villain, he was also noted for his performance in strong character roles. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1981 for his performance in the movie Oppol.

Biography

Balan K. Nair was born as eldest among four to Idakkulam K Veettil Kutti Raman Nair, a store owner, and Devaki Amma, a housewife in 1933 near Koilandy. He has two brothers and a sister. His parents died when he was very young and hence he had to take care of his siblings and discontinue his studies at eight th grade. Prior to his entry in films, he worked as a mechanic in Kozhikode and owned a metal workshop. He sarted his acting career at the age of 14. At that time he was associated with Sangamam Theatre in Kozhikode, Muppathunkavu troupe, Kozhikodan drama troupes and his own drama troupe Subash Theaters. After his marriage to Sharadha, he moved to Shoranur in Palakkad.

His son Meghanathan is also a Malayalam film actor. Balan died of Bone Cancer at Sree Chitra Tirunal Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram on 26 August 2000. He was 67. Balan K. Nair is survived by his wife, Sarada, and children, Anil, Meghanathan, Ajayakumar, Latha and Sujatha.

Amaram is the story of Achootty (Mammootty), a fisherman and his daughter, Radha (Maathu). The uneducated Achootty wants his daughter to be educated and also want her to become a doctor. His dreams get shattered when she falls in love with her childhood friend. One fine day Achootys's daughter and her lover elope and get married. Achootty does not like his son-in-law initially and in disappointment does not talk to his daughter either. But slowly the young chap shows that he is an able and hard-working fisherman and gains Achootty's silent admiration. Achooty does not acknowledge this is public, but keeps heckling his son-in-law in public taunting him to catch a shark and prove himself before he dares talk to Achooty. One day, the son-in-law decides he's had enough of the taunting and goes to the deep sea to capture a shark. But he is inexperienced and in a fit of daring goes out alone in his catamaran. When he does not return, people think that Achootty killed him at sea since Achootty has also been to the sea that day.

Deserted by his mother, teenaged Raju is adopted by Beeranikka, a Muslim ferryman. Raju soon starts accompanying Beeranikka in ferrying people. One day, he meets a young girl who is returning to her native town Kozhikode after the death of her mother. The girl invites Raju to Kozhikode where she would be staying with her father and uncle. Not interested in leaving the ferrying job, Raju rejects the invitation. A few days later, he finds himself in possession of an ornament which he thinks belongs to the girl. He travels to Kozhikode to return the ornament and finds the girl after many days of search. The girl does not recognise Raju and says the ornament does not belong to her. Disheartened, Raju returns to the ferry.

Balan (Mohanlal) is in search of Raju (Salim Ghouse) and the search takes him to a hillside. Venugopal (Mammootty), a rich young business man still considers Shivan as his mentor, who had helped him in his early days in Mumbai.At the time of his death, Shivan has asked Venu to take care of his younger brother Rajashekharan (Suresh Gopi), which Venu obeyed whole heartedly. Rajan was appointed as his manager and is treated more like his brother. On a visit to Rajan's house along with him, Venu meets Devi (Rupini). Venu expresses Rajan's sister about his wish to marry Devi, but changes his mind after realizing that she is already engaged to Rajan. Venu whole heartedly gets Rajan married to Devi. Rajan, in thirst to earn quick money, gets into bad company and severs ties with Venu. He becomes suspicious of his wife having an illicit relation with Venu. Slowly turning into too much of drinking and gambling, Rajan falls into huge debts and to make things worse, he also becomes a part of smuggling. Venu's efforts to save Rajan from his problems and bringing him back to normal life is the rest of the story.
