Escape at Dawn (暁の脱走, Akatsuki no dassō) is a 1950 Japanese film which revolves around a tragic affair between a soldier involved in the Manchurian campaign and a prostitute.

The story was remade as Story of a Prostitute directed by Seijun Suzuki.

Synopsis

Mikami, a Japanese soldier serving in China, is captured by Chinese forces. Although he is able to escape, he is treated with contempt by his peers. After falling in love with a prostitute named Harumi, she convinces him to desert the army and live with her.

Sukezaemon est un bandit recherché pour piraterie par les autorités japonaises. Arrivant à s’échapper de son exécution, il affirme devant tout ses hommes vouloir devenir un véritable pirate. Mais c’est en apercevant la princesse et ses bijoux, qu’il décide d’aller voir d’un peu plus près la réalité.

Japon, hiver 1935. Le peintre Shimamura se rend dans un onsen, une station thermale de montagne pour retrouver Komako, rencontrée durant l'été précédent. Atteint de tuberculose, Yukio est revenu auprès des siens pour y passer ses derniers jours, soigné par Yoko, l'autre fille adoptive de la professeur de musique.

Un panneau au nom de sa famille célébrant l'événement est apposé sur le temple en remplacement de celui de Daiemon, apportant un grand prestige à la famille Hoshino. Lors du concours suivant, Daiemon échoue à retrouver son bien avec « seulement » 7300 flèches ayant touché la cible et se suicide par seppuku.
