Synopsis
Mikami, a Japanese soldier serving in China, is captured by Chinese forces. Although he is able to escape, he is treated with contempt by his peers. After falling in love with a prostitute named Harumi, she convinces him to desert the army and live with her.Actors

Sukezaemon est un bandit recherché pour piraterie par les autorités japonaises. Arrivant à s’échapper de son exécution, il affirme devant tout ses hommes vouloir devenir un véritable pirate. Mais le sort en décidera autrement puisque une tempête vient détruire ce rêve, réduisant le bateau en pièces, tuant tout l’équipage. Il se retrouve seul avec un trésor et deux hommes. Et une seconde fois, la malchance s’abat sur lui, dans cette détresse il croise le grand Pirate Noir qui ne se prive pas de tuer les deux hommes et de lui voler son trésor. Délaissé en pleine mer, il dérive vers une terre inconnue où un vieillard lui vient en aide. Il apprend que la situation du pays est plutôt mauvaise, en effet le roi prend en otage les femmes sans jamais les libérer. Mais c’est en apercevant la princesse et ses bijoux, qu’il décide d’aller voir d’un peu plus près la réalité.

Ichiro Aoye (Toshirō Mifune), an artist, meets a famous young classical singer, Miyako Saijo (Shirley Yamaguchi) whilst working on his paintings in the mountains. After discovering they are both heading for the same location he offers to give her a motorcycle ride to where they are staying. On the way, they are spotted by paparazzi for the tabloid magazine Amour, who track the two down. As Saijo refuses to grant the photographers an interview, they plot their revenge by taking a picture of the couple having breakfast on a balcony and print it under the headline 'The Love Story of Miyako Saijo'.

Japon, hiver 1935. Le peintre Shimamura se rend dans un onsen, une station thermale de montagne pour retrouver Komako, rencontrée durant l'été précédent. Lui est marié et habite à Tokyo, tandis qu’elle est devenue geisha dans l'onsen. Elle doit une travailler pour subvenir aux besoins de sa mère et de sa famille adoptive. En effet, sa mère adoptive, ancienne geisha et professeur de musique, ne peut plus exercer depuis qu'elle a subi une attaque qui l'a laissée handicapée et il faut payer les frais d'hospitalisation de Yukio, son fils tombé gravement malade à Tokyo. Atteint de tuberculose, Yukio est revenu auprès des siens pour y passer ses derniers jours, soigné par Yoko, l'autre fille adoptive de la professeur de musique.

Un samouraï du nom de Daiemon qui détenait le record du nombre de flèches tirées sur une cible en une journée avec 6200 flèches, lors du tournoi annuel qui se déroule au temple Sanjūsangen-dō de Kyoto, est détrôné l'année suivante par Kanzaemon Hoshino qui parvient à toucher 8000 fois la cible. Un panneau au nom de sa famille célébrant l'événement est apposé sur le temple en remplacement de celui de Daiemon, apportant un grand prestige à la famille Hoshino. Lors du concours suivant, Daiemon échoue à retrouver son bien avec « seulement » 7300 flèches ayant touché la cible et se suicide par seppuku.
