Synopsis
Un samouraï du nom de Daiemon qui détenait le record du nombre de flèches tirées sur une cible en une journée avec 6200 flèches, lors du tournoi annuel qui se déroule au temple Sanjūsangen-dō de Kyoto, est détrôné l'année suivante par Kanzaemon Hoshino qui parvient à toucher 8000 fois la cible. Un panneau au nom de sa famille célébrant l'événement est apposé sur le temple en remplacement de celui de Daiemon, apportant un grand prestige à la famille Hoshino. Lors du concours suivant, Daiemon échoue à retrouver son bien avec « seulement » 7300 flèches ayant touché la cible et se suicide par seppuku.Actors

During a rebellion in 1159 the samurai Morito desires the lady-in-waiting Kesa but she's already married to Wataru. Morito decides to get rid of his rival. The film depicts a tough period in the life of Masako Fukuhara (Kinuyo Tanaka) who struggles to look after an ill son, failing from dust of velvet-making workshop, a husband ill from overwork in the war, a young girl, a younger boy cousin and a teenage daughter Toshiko (Kyōko Kagawa). Forced to take over the family dry-cleaning business after the death of her husband, Masako also attempts to cope with her daughter's rebellious behavior. Fumiko Hayashi (Hideko Takamine) is a young woman can't find a decent job, meanwhile being dumped by her boyfriend and writing on the side. People say her writing on poverty is good, but she can't sell it and continues with dead end factory and bar hostess jobs and occasional heavy drinking. She gets together with another aspiring writer Fukuya (Akira Takarada) who can't sell his work either. Despite she doing all she can for him and his disease tuberculosis, he abuses her verbally and eventually physically. She walks out, comes back, walks out again. A kind man, Nobuo Sadaoka (Daisuke Katō) helps her occasionally, but she rejects his proposal. After these struggles, the film ends up with her literary success.

Le déclin de la maison de geishas de Tsutayako (Otsuta) à Tokyo : les filles s'en vont, les dettes s'accumulent... In 1876, U.S. Army captain Civil War veteran Nathan Algren is traumatized by his participation in atrocities during the Indian Wars, and has become an embittered alcoholic. Algren is approached by his former commanding officer, Colonel Bagley, on behalf of Japanese businessman Omura, who wishes to hire distinguished U.S. soldiers to train the Imperial Japanese Army to suppress a samurai rebellion, led by Katsumoto Moritsugu. In exchange, Japan would ratify a lucrative trade agreement that would grant the U.S. exclusive rights to supply arms to the Japanese government. Although Algren despises Bagley for having ordered atrocities during the Indian wars, he accepts the job for the money and sails to Japan. Most of the soldiers being trained are little more than inexperienced peasants and farmers.The training is interrupted when the samurai rebels attack a railroad owned by Omura; Bagley orders the regiment to mobilize, overruling Algren's objection that the soldiers are not ready. Algren is proved correct: during a battle in a foggy forest in Yoshino Province, the undisciplined and intimidated soldiers panic and are quickly routed by the samurai horsemen. Algren kills several samurai with his revolver and saber but is eventually knocked from his horse. Algren desperately fights using a spear tipped flagstaff with a flag of a white tiger until he collapses from complete exhaustion. As he is about to be vanquished, he kills his would-be executioner with the staff's spear tip. His ferocity and refusal to surrender, as well as the image of the white tiger on the flag he is fighting with, reminds Katsumoto of a recurring dream. As a result, Algren is spared and taken captive to the rebels' village in the mountains.
