Synopsis
The story of the film revolves around two neighboring families. One family is headed by Sethji (Paresh Rawal) and the other by Devyani (Dimple Kapadia). Rahul (Govinda) is Sethji's son. He has just returned to his native town after completing his studies. Radhika (Urmila Matondkar), is Devyani’s sister-in-law, recently arrived from the village. Radhika and Rahul, predictably, fall in love. Devyani is impressed with her business associate, Dhananjay (Nirmal Pandey). She is also aware of Rahul and Radhika's clandestine meetings, so she offers Radhika's hand in marriage to Dhananjay, who delightedly accepts. Rahul has to prove his love to Dhananjay and Devyani. Suraj and Deepak live a poor lifestyle in a village along with their widowed father, who has always taught them to be honest. When Kajal (Sridevi) marries Raaj (Anil Kapoor), an Engineer by profession, she and her dad (Kader Khan), automatically assume that he is rich, wealthy, and corrupt. Kader khan is very happy that his daughter does not have any in-laws, and that she'll get to rule the roost in her new house. But that is not the case. Raaj does not have an air-conditioner, a car, not even a refrigerator. This infuriates Kajal, and in her mind she creates a separate world, where she is rich, wealthy, has several cars, and lives lavishly in a big bungalow. Even the birth of two children (a young son and a little daughter), and several years of marriage, does not change Kajal. An example of this occurs when Kajal meets her old friend Nisha (Poonam Dhillon) who Kajal feeds a pack of lies such that her husband is a business magnate, her family own several cars, live in a big bungalow etc. Nisha who is more wealthy than Kajal then offers to give her a lift home, only for Kajal to have to lie about the directions to her home according to the story she has fabricated. Kajal then realises her mistake when the bungalow she points out as her own turns out to be Nisha's. Nisha explains to Kajal that no matter how much and how little you have, your own house is your own home and that fabricating such stories only adds insult to her husband, family and home. When Janhvi (Urmila Matondkar) Raaj's boss's (Saeed Jaffrey) niece comes from overseas, she meets Raj at the airport and assumes he is the driver. AS she behaves rudely with him, he sends her back home alone, not caring about what his boss would say on that. Jahnvi reaches the office well in time and praises Raj's attitude, but when she learns that he's an engineer working for her uncle's construction company, she apologises to him. Shani uncle introduces her with Vikram Khanna, a handsome young guy, who is his business partner. Vikram observes Jahnvi and likes the young, naturally vivacious girl very much. He almost dreams of marrying her. They both become friends. One day, Vikram and Jahnvi go to sight seeing Jahnvi's guest house, at the new property location. Sahni gets worried as the weather is going from bad to worse but both have not returned till evening. At the other side, as Raj leaves the office to go for the farmhouse, Vikram is seeing asking Jahnvi for marriage casually. But Jahnvi says that she didn't find him special to be her choice. She rejects his advances. Vikram tries to get physical with her but Jahnvi slaps him. Angered at the slap, Vikram throws her down on the bed and forcibly tries to get intimate with her. But Raj arrives in the nick of time and saves Jahnvi. Vikram threatens him with loss of his job but he doesn't care. Jahnvi remembers how earlier Raj had rejected the job n apartment offer from a rival company due to Mr. Sahni's help. She starts liking Raj since the moment and falls in love with him. When she learns that he is a married man whose wife she helped in the electronics store for buying a large music player, she is adamant on getting married to Raj by hook or by crook. After meeting the greedy Kajal inside the city Ganesh temple, Janhvi offers two crore rupees in exchange for marriage to Raaj. And Kajal, seeing this as her opportunity to gain wealth and an easy life, accepts her proposal not knowing that she is making a big mistake and this decision will change her life forever.

Narasimha, a young and captive man, lives a middle class life with his family in a quiet neighborhood. He gets his beautiful sister married to an eligible young man in their vicinity. On the occasion of his sister giving birth, he returns home to find a communal conflict arise between his neighborhood which spreads in the whole city. He seeks refuge in a dwelling area nearby only to return and find out his whole family has been murdered. With no aim left in life Narsimha decides to turn to crime and alcohol. He later decides to work for a man called Suraj Narayan Singh aka Bapji who is a big goonlord and capitalist of the city and basically controls the law and order of the city and rules over it using muscle power and his immense wealth . Bapji was delighted to get hold of a man like Narsimha who has wits and also muscle power but has lost desire to live and hence Narsimha executes his most difficult works which others cant accomplish. Bapji believes that he has become invincible and nobody can dare protest him since he has the city under his complete subjugation. He considers Narsimha as a weapon which can unlock his most difficult problems and a Narsimha, who is completely dejected from life, accomplishes them without asking any questions. Narsimha remains drunk full day and only comes when summoned by Bapji to execute Bapji's assignments and receive his payments.

Ganga (Govinda) and Gauri (Karishma Kapoor) are in love but the young lovers are not permitted to marry. One night they run away, finding themselves in the den of an evil sage (Puneet Issar) who is trying to coerce the Lord of the Snakes (Nitish Bharadwaj) into giving him a gem he needs to make the nectar which will give him immortality. This event can only happen on this one night of the full moon, which comes only once ever twenty five years. But the young lovers defend the Snake and destruct the Sage's plan. The angry sage turns Gauri to a stone and unable to withstand the shock, Gangwa passes away. But the magical snake saves the day by proclaiming that Gangwa will be reborn, still with love in his heart for Gauri, and twenty five years later they will find each other again.

Raja Babu (Govinda) is a poor orphan adopted by a wealthy village couple (Kader Khan and Aruna Irani). He is a typical country bumpkin, good-hearted but lacking in urban manners. His vanity, not discouraged by his mother's doting, leads him to have his photograph taken often at the village photo studio, each time in a different outfit. He is always accompanied by his sidekick Nandu, (Shakti Kapoor). Nandu is of a lower rung in the social strata, evidenced by his refusal to be seated on Raja's motorcycle, even when implored: the same kindness extended by the wealthy Singh family in adopting Raja is evident in the family's treatment of Raja's friend, in spite of Nandu's clownish antics.
