Kartar Singh is a Pakistani Punjabi film about the Partition of India and the violence after it. It describes the conflicts between Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. This film is said to be based on real-life events in 1947. The title role is about an antagonist Kartar Singh who is a petty criminal and trouble maker. The title character is played by Allauddin who became very well-known after this film. He is often remembered for this film. It is said that Sikhs failed to recognize him as a Muslim,on seeing this film in Indian Punjab theater screens, as he is not a Sikh in real life. It is considered to be one of the super hit blockbuster Punjabi films in Pakistan and ranks highly in the history of Punjabi cinema. This film was also shown for three years in East Punjab,India.
Synopsis
This film is set in village in Punjab, India where Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs are living peacefully. Prem Nath Zarif is most respected in the village. Sudhir, is renowned World War II veteran who has fought in Burma and lives in the village. Kartar Singh is the main villain who is petty criminal and a trouble maker. When Partition of India happens, the Muslims of the village including the hero Umer and his love lady Mussarat Nazir wants to migrate to Pakistan. They are leaving when there is hostility and violence everywhere. During this time, Umer Din's sister (Laila) is abducted by the Sikhs but she is protected by an elderly Sikh who gives her shelter and looks after her. When his son tries to force himself on her, the old man kills him. The old man sends Umer Din a letter that his sister is safe and unviolated and sends her safely to Pakistan. Kartar Singh on one of his raids has a scuffle with Umer Din, who works with the Border Police, at the border. Umer shoots him but just wounds him and lets him go. His life saved, Kartar Singh has a change of heart. In order to redeem himself, he takes Umer's younger brother, sheltered by Prem Nath, back to him in Pakistan. But he is killed at the border as Umer feels he has come on one of his raids again and shoots him down.

He has been assigned the task by Police Commissioner Ramesh Kulkarni (Om Shivpuri). The Commissioner informs him that Dharam Kohli (Utpal Dutt), who is standing as an MLA in the upcoming elections, is also involved with smuggling activities. On taking charge Bharat has to suspend Inspector Thakur for corruption charges and being in league with Kohli. Bharat is then informed by sources about Mahesh (Sudhir), one of the Kohli's (also referred to as Don) henchman. He goes to arrest Mahesh at his house where Mahesh stays with his mother and sister. There Bharat has a confrontation with Prabha (Aparna Sen), who is a family friend. Aparna stays as a lodger with a kind-hearted old gentleman, George Fernandes (David). Mahesh goes to Prabha's room at night and tries to get her to take a letter to his mother which will be collected by Kohli's men. Prabha refuses saying she won't be party to any of Mahesh's wrongdoings. The conversation is overheard by Bharat and his team, who arrest Mahesh as soon as he leaves the premises.
