Synopsis
Thangaraj (Nassar) is the eldest brother and he has two younger brothers : `Boxer' Krishnan (Vadivelu) and Sivaraman (Karan). Thangaraj is married to Meenakshi (Kushboo) and they have a teenage daughter Padma (Kavitha) while 'Boxer' Krishnan married to Kanagavalli (Kovai Sarala) and they have four little children. They all live together in the house of Veerapandi (Thyagu) whose only son Dhandapani (Vivek) is in love with Thangaraj's daughter Padma. Without any work, 'Boxer' Krishnan tries his hand in politics and there too he fails. In the past, Thangaraj and his wife Meenakshi worked hard to educate Sivaraman and Sivaraman becomes a successful general manager in a factory.Actors

Thirupathi (Vadivelu), Ezhumalai (S. Ve. Shekher) and Venkatesa (Prabhu) are poor friends who tried to become rich. Nachiappan (Venniradai Moorthy), a bungalow watchman, has three daughters : Lalitha (Kovai Sarala), Padmini (Urvashi) and Ragini (Roja). When his owner left the bungalow on vacation, Nachiappan's daughters decide to live there. Parvathiamma(Latha) is the domineering mother of three sons Kandha(Prabhu), Kadamba(S.V.Sekhar) and Kathirvela(Vivek), who do her every bidding. They move around in an auto and work at their own hotel. Parvatiamma has disavowed her only daughter ever since she ran away with a barber Vedivelan(Vadivelu). Now the daughter's wish is to have her brothers present at the function of her son. Vadivelan takes this task upon himself and enters the household. His first job is to fix up the marriages of the sons with Rupini(Roja), Ragini(Sarala) and Rohini(Nirosha). Parvatiamma counterattacks by first ejecting him from the house and then separating her sons from their wives. Whether the couples reunite and Vedivelan succeeds or not forms the rest of the story.

Rathi (Kushboo), a music video director, lives with her husband Ravi (Nassar) and their two kids. However, she is unaware that her husband Ravi is in fact a robber. He carries out smart crimes with his partner Sabesan (Prakash Raj). The police officer Dev (Thalaivasal Vijay) is pressured to arrest them. After a diamond heist which gone wrong, Ravi finally gets caught while Sabesan escapes. Ravi managed to hide the diamonds in his house before being hauled off by the police. During the police custody, Ravi is shot by Dev, injuring him heavily. So Ravi is moved to the hospital and the doctors eventually saves his life. Thereafter, Sabesan goes to his ward and he questions Ravi about the diamonds. Sabesan even killed his partner to leave oneself a way out. Sabesan is now urged to find the diamonds and enters Rathi's household as Ravi's friend. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

In the South Indian kingdom of Cholapuram Paalayam in the year 1771, Raja Mokkaiyappar and his queen, Rajamatha Bhavani Ammaiyar are desperate for a child, as all their previous twenty-two children have died at birth. Unknown to them, Bhavani's brother, Sangilimayan, who is also the Rajaguru (Chief Minister), is responsible for the death of their children. Sangilimayan is shocked to see that his sister has given birth to twins. Before informing the king about the birth, he calls the palace astrologer, Chinnavadayaan, who predicts that the elder twin will be incapable of making decisions on his own while the younger one will be smarter. Sangilimayan orders the palace doctor, Kailasakaruppan, to kill the younger one, but Chinnavadayaan tells Sangilimayan that his actions would not be good for the kingdom. Instead, Sangilimayan orders the palace doctor to abandon the child in a nearby river. The elder child is named Pulikecei XXIII. Maragathavalli, Kailasakaruppan's childless wife, rescues the abandoned child from the river, and the couple decides to raise him as their own, naming him Ukraputhan.

Gopalakrishnan (Pandiarajan), a clever cook from Coimbatore, moves to an apartment in Chennai. He becomes quickly popular and appreciated among the apartment's women, however their husbands get jealous of Gopalakrishnan. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Usha (Kushboo). He decides to marry her with the support of his neighbours. After the marriage, Usha has just learned that Gopalakrishnan was already married. The film starts with Singaravelan a.k.a. Velan (Kamal Hassan), on his birthday taming a wild bull by just talking to him. He seems to share a special bond with animals as he works in his farm filled with animals. Later that day, his mother, Parvathy (Sumithra), calls him and decides to tell him the truth about his father. Velan, in his hyper imagination, thinks that his father was killed by four goons (as is the case of many Tamil films then) but soon learns that his father did actually die of a brain illness like he had been told before. But, he had died heartbroken that his marriage with Velan’s mother was not accepted by her sister-in-law and they had broken all links. Further, they believe that it was Parvathy’s curse that killed them in a car accident and they get promise from the guardian, that their daughter should not be married to Parvathy's son. Velan’s mother reveals that it is Velan’s duty to get married to her brother's daughter Sumathi (Khusboo) to bring the separated family back together. Armed with only a picture of the girl when she was 4, he leaves for Madras to fulfill his mother’s wishes.

Maayi (Sarathkumar) is the well-respected, do-gooder in the village. He sees women in the village as his sisters and even conducts their marriages. But during the marriage the guys family misunderstood that Meena and Sarathkumar are lovers and stopped the marriage. In the end; Sarathkumar married Meena.
