Le Destin des Habsbourg - La tragédie d'un empire (titre original allemand : Das Schicksal derer von Habsburg) est un film muet dramatique et historique allemand en noir et blanc, réalisé par Rolf Raffé avec Leni Riefenstahl en vedette, sorti en 1928.

Synopsis

Entre les dernières années du XIX et le début du XX siècle, le couple impérial autrichien, François-Joseph et son épouse Sissi se partagent entre la capitale autrichienne et leur château de Schönbrunn. Après la gloire viendra la décadence. Sissi est assassinée en 1898, le prince héritier Rodolphe connaît une fin tragique à Mayerling et l'archiduc François-Ferdinand est tué dans un attentat à Sarajevo en 1914. Cet acte déclenchera la Première Guerre mondiale qui elle-même signera la fin de la dynastie des Habsbourg.

Jannings' character, the doorman for a famous hotel, is demoted to washroom (restroom) attendant, as he is considered too old and infirm to be the image of the hotel. He tries to conceal his demotion from his friends and family, but to his shame, he is discovered. His friends, thinking he has lied to them all along about his prestigious job, taunt him mercilessly while his family rejects him out of shame. The man, shocked and in incredible grief, returns to the hotel to sleep in the washroom where he works. The only person to be kind towards him is the night watchman, who covers him with his coat as he falls asleep.

Meteorologist Hannes (Sepp Rist) works alone at a remote weather station below the summit of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Every day he gathers data on weather conditions. When the weather is clear, he is able to use his telescope to gaze down at the town of Chamonix in the valley far below. His solitary life is interrupted only by the daily weather reports he transmits via Morse code to various weather centers throughout Europe. He is also able to listen to his friend Walter perform his organ concerts on the radio.
