The 1973 Chilean coup d'état resulted in President Salvador Allende being overthrown and Augusto Pinochet coming to power in Chile. This film tells the story of the former members of Allende's cabinet, who were arrested and incarcerated in a political prison, specially designed as a concentration camp on Dawson Island, Tierra del Fuego. The camp had been used in the early 20th century to house Selk'nam and other indigenous peoples, moving them from the main island to end their interference with the large sheep ranches that had been established, as they persisted in hunting in their former territories.

Lulu Massa is a reliable and dedicated factory worker but then he loses a finger due to a work accident. He lets himself get agitated by communistic students and becomes an agitator himself. Après deux années passées sur le continent, Salvatore retourne dans sa Sicile natale. Alors qu'il rêve d'être accueilli en fils prodigue, il constate que les habitants de son village l'attendent, plutôt impatiemment, afin d'y dénouer un conflit d'ordre social. La question cruciale est celle-ci : faut-il occuper les domaines que la récente loi a expropriés et partagés et que la Mafia empêche qu'on leur distribue ? Les paysans entament une action pacifique, mais Salvatore veut aller plus loin : en labourant et semant, ils doivent provoquer une situation irréversible. Les paysans se mettent au travail, mais la Mafia les attaque à l'aube. Les carabiniers interviennent alors pour empêcher les combats. Ne s'avouant pas vaincue, la Mafia entreprend de contrôler l'affermage des carrières du voisinage. Simultanément, elle cherche à gagner à sa cause Salvatore, en l'achetant si nécessaire. Bien qu'il feigne d'accepter la négociation, Salvatore engage une campagne pour améliorer les conditions de travail dans les carrières. Un matin, Salvatore s'en prend violemment au chef local de la Mafia : celle-ci le liquide physiquement, une heure après. Le village entier, lui rendant hommage, assiste à ses funérailles.

Carlo Levi was a painter and writer, but he also had a degree in medicine. Arrested in 1935 by Mussolini's regime for his anti-Fascist activities, he was sent to live in a remote town in southern Italy, in the region of Lucania which is known today as Basilicata. A recently promoted police inspector (Gian Maria Volonté) kills his mistress (Florinda Bolkan), and then covers up his involvement in the crime. He insinuates himself into the investigation, planting clues to steer his subordinate officers toward a series of other suspects, including the woman's gay husband and a student radical. He then exonerates the other suspects and leads the investigators toward him, in order to prove that he is "above suspicion" and can get away with anything, even while being investigated. In the end, he confesses to the crime in front of his superiors - who refuse to believe him. Sure that he is safe, he recants his confession, and receives the approval of the police commissioner.
