My Friend Max (French: Mon amie Max) is a 1994 Canadian drama film, written by Guy Fournier and Jefferson Lewis, directed by Michel Brault. The film was selected as the Canadian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 67th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

Synopsis

The film is set in contemporary Quebec City, Quebec. Catherine (Marthe Keller), a concert pianist, is surprised one night by the arrival of her childhood friend Max (Geneviève Bujold), whom she hasn't seen for 25 years.

Claude (Claude Gauthier) leaves his small town on the Côte-Nord to go to Montreal, where he works several odd jobs and eventually falls in love with Geneviève (Geneviève Bujold), a pretty waitress who works in a local diner. Claude enters a singing contest that launches his career. As he gradually becomes more well known, he has a brief affair with a married woman and breaks up with Geneviève. He returns to his hometown but nothing seems the same. Back in Montreal, he becomes increasingly more successful as a singer. One night he meets Geneviève backstage, only to learn she is now married, and realizes one can be as lonely in a small town as in a big city.

Le film se déroule en 1838, en plein coeur du conflit entre les habitants français du Bas-Canada et les occupants anglais. À l'automne de la même année, François-Xavier Bouchard et plusieurs de ses compatriotes sont capturés. Jugés par un tribunal militaire, 12 patriotes sont pendus devant la porte de la prison, sous les yeux horrifiés de leurs compagnons. Pendant plusieurs mois, des dizaines d'autres patriotes, eux aussi condamnés à mort, attendent dans l'angoisse une exécution qui ne viendra jamais. Le film est inspiré des journaux authentiques de ceux qui vécurent ces évenements.
