Giran is an Egyptian 2009 documentary film.

Synopsis

Built at the dawn of the 20th century, the neighborhood of Garden City was a small residential area bordering on downtown Cairo, Egypt, where international political leaders had their residences. Giran walks us through this neighborhood as it is nowadays. Abandoned mansions, luxurious salons, embassies, shops or rooftops, where a whole family lives. The houses and their occupants, witnesses of the changes in History, tell tales of break-ups, hopes and survival.

This documentary follows in the tracks of teenage girls living on the streets of Cairo, Egypt, a universe of violence, but also of freedom. These girls own a surprising strength, mixing necessary laughter with the toughness needed to survive day after day. Their existence, their lives and the codes they follow challenge the social model. Their days are sown with threats; sometimes it is the police and their raids, other times, the kidnappings carried out by their street fellows as well as the fights that sometimes get out of hand. In 2004, the King of Morocco launched an Equity and Reconciliation Commission to investigate state violence during the Years of Lead. For three years, the film follows four families in their search for the truth: Activist, young rebel soldier or simple citizen, either they or their relations were imprisoned in different parts of Morocco. Each person tries to "find out", discover a "reason", to be able to mourn. But forty years later, the state secret finally unveils the existence of another, more intimate secret, the family secret. They all feel the need to reconstruct history and recover their parents, taken from them twice over, once by their disappearance and another by the secret. Choosing between deeply set silences, lies and taboos within and outside the families, over forty years.

After the ikiza (the Burundi killings of Hutu intellectuals in 1972), the Burundi refugees exiled in Tanzania founded the Party for the Liberation of the Hutu People. Its armed representative is the NLF, the National Liberation Front. In 2006, after prolonged negotiations with the opposition and the Army, the president of Burundi made a public call, over the radio, to all NLF soldiers asking them to step away from the armed front and voluntarily join the peace process. Within this context, Tune in to Peace enters the lives of three young people: Désiré, Jean Claude and Jérémie, all ex members of the NLF.
