Pava Mannippu (English: Clemency) is a 1961 Tamil language drama film directed by A. Bhimsingh. The film features Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Savitri, M. V. Rajamma, Devika and M. R. Radha in lead roles. The film, produced by Buddha Pictures, had musical score by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy and was released on 16 March 1961. The film was the first South Indian film to receive the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film. The film revolved around the theme of religious harmony with characters belonging to Hindu, Muslim and Christian communties. The film was dubbed into Telugu as Papa Pariharam.

Synopsis

Three children adopted from their by birth homes and raised by foster parents grow up in Muslim, Christian and Hindu households. But will they ever reunite with their original families?

Balu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Velu (Gemini Ganesan) work in British Indian Air Force and are fighting with allied forces in World War II. Their plane crashes due to bombs dropped by Japanese. Velu is grievously injured. Balu carries him 50 miles to a village in assam. There Velu regains consciousness and his health starts improving under the care of Indroma (Savithri) and her father, in whose house they are staying. Japanese soldiers come in search of these two. Balu hides Velu and when Japanese are about to discover Velu, he gives himself up to save Velu. Velu recovers, and marries Indroma, teaches her Tamil and calls her Indra. velu is found my members of British Indian army the day after his wedding and has to leave with them, leaving his wife behind. Indra is pregnant and gives birth to a child, however, their village is bombed and she loses her eyesight. When Velu comes in search of his wife, he only sees the ruins of the former village and grieves thinking his wife is dead and goes to Chennai to his maternal uncle.

Rajasekhar (Sivaji Ganesan) becomes the guardian to his younger sister Radha (Savitri) after their parents’ death. The brother-sister duo love, care and adore each other and are inseparable. When the factory in which Rajasekhar works is shut down due to a labour problem and he is depressed, Radha gives him ₹1000 which she had earned and saved by making toys. She advises him to use this money as seed capital and commence his own toy business. The dutiful brother follows his sister’s advice, starts a business and in a short time, becomes rich. Anand (Gemini Ganesan) an ex-colleague of Rajasekhar who earlier helped him to get a job in his old factory, is jobless and approaches Rajasekhar for work. Rajasekhar appoints him in his concern and over a period of time, Anand and Radha fall in love. Rajasekhar, who is very possessive of his sister, gets angry with Anand as he feels betrayed.

Rajalingam (Gemini Ganesan) is the only son of Ramalingam (T. S. Balaiah), the zamindar of Kalathur. Kannamma (Savithri) is the daughter of Murugan (S. V. Subbaiah), a farmer of the same place. On the zamindar's advice, Murugan sends his daughter to Madras for higher education. While returning from Madras, Kannamma meets Raja in the train. Noticing her respect and awe for the zamindar, Raja calls himself an electrician visiting the zamin palace. They fall in love. A few days later, Kannamma learns the truth and to reassure her, Raja marries her secretly in a temple.

Vaidyalingam Moopanar and his younger brother Sundaralingam live together along with their family. It is one big happy joint family. Vaidyalingam does not have any children while Sundaralingam has two sons. His older son's left hand is paralysed since childhood, while his younger son is studying in college in the city. Vaidyalingam's wife is bitter and keeps cursing Sundaralingam and his family, while Vaidyalingam is very affectionate towards them and is unhappy with his wife for her bad behaviour. Arrive Singaram and his sister Amudha who are related to Vaidyalingam's wife Akilandam. Singaram's entry into the house causes a lot of confusion and the family splits.
