Palegara (Kannada: ಪಾಳೇಗಾರ) is a 1996 Indian Kannada film, directed by N Omprakash Rao and produced by S V S Chinni and M K Prakash. The film stars Ambarish, Kushboo, Nirosha and Srikanya in lead roles. The film had musical score by Hamsalekha. The film was a remake of Tamil film Nattamai. This was the first remake while the second remake was Simhadriya Simha (2002).
Aatma (Hariharan) is an international fusion singer and social activist, who protests for the emancipation of women and writes books on the subject. His latest book, Marana Sasanam, proves to be controversial and subsequently leads to him being put under house arrest. Through a flashback to visiting students, he narrates the story of the Indian village girl Jyoti (Kushboo) who gets married and then widowed in her formative years, resulting in her dropping out of education. She then gets married to a wealthy NRI, Shyam (Riyaz Khan), and leaves India to head to Canada.
Manimaran (Sarath Kumar), his father Poochi (S. V. Ramadas) and his grandfather Nagappan (M. N. Nambiar) are short-tempered persons who beat the villagers for a simple quarrel. Only, Manimaran's mother, Sivagami (Lakshmi) can control them. Uma (Rajeswari), Manimaran's sister, gets married with a man of another village. Manimaran falls in love with Vaidehi (Devayani), a Brahmin girl, and gets married with her without her permission. In a fight against Manimaran, the antagonist becomes a blind in one eye and decides to take revenge on Manimaran. When Manimaran drives his pregnant sister, the antagonist stops him but Manimaran beats the antagonist and his henchmen. Uma comes too late at the hospital and dies with her baby. Vaidehi leaves their house because of her husband's behavior who brings Uma's death. Manimaran changes his behavior and tries to convince Vaidehi to come back home.
Jeeva (Parthiban), a social activist, ends up in a police lock-up. Mahesh (Ranjith), a police officer, is surprised to see his best friend Jeeva in this condition and brings him at his home. Mahesh lives happily with his wife Aarthi (Devayani) and his daughter (Baby Hemalatha).
