Ponmaanai Thedi is a 1998 Tamil comedy-drama film directed by Paari. The film features Saravanan and Suvarna Mathew in lead roles, with Vinu Chakravarthy, R. Sundarrajan, Delhi Ganesh, Vadivelu, Venniradai Moorthy and Sathyapriya playing supporting roles. The film, produced by Suba. Senthik Kumar, had musical score by Soundaryan and was released on 2 December 1998.

Synopsis

Sundaram (Saravanan) is a good for nothing young man while his father Ayyappan (Vinu Chakravarthy) is a rich house owner. Ayyappan can't bear Sundaram's laziness. One day, his cousin Priya (Suvarna Mathew) and her parents comes from Mumbai to Sundaram's village. Priya is a well-educated and modern girl. After meeting Priya, Sundaram falls in love with her. Ayyappan decides to prepare the marriage between Sundaram and Priya but in the meantime Priya's parents arrange the marriage of Priya with another man. Ayyappan hides the truth to the naive Sundaram. At the wedding day, Sundaram manages to stop the wedding at time. In contrast, Priya slaps him and reveals that she was not in love with Sundaram. The groom's family cancels the wedding and Shanmugam dies from a heart attack. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

The film opens with Arasu (Sarath Kumar) murdering a person in Mumbai. Later the story shifts to Kumbakonam where he is an assistant to a temple priest (Delhi Ganesh). Soon the priest’s daughter Meera (Simran) falls in love with Arasu. At the stroke of interval Arasu sheds his mask and murders a rowdy who is out from jail and this shocks everybody. Then in a flashback he tells that his father (Sarath Kumar) believes in taking law into his hands and thus had lot of enemies. When he confronts a bad guy (Sai Kumar) and humiliates him, the villains later kills Arasu’s father. The rest of the story is how Arasu takes revenge.

Karmegham (Mammootty) returns to his village after serving in the army for long. He finds that the villagers still live the shackles of old customs and traditions. They work as slaves to a feudal landlord (Radha Ravi) who exploits them. Maheswari (Abhirami), a doctor, falls in love with Karmegham. Later through his mother (Manorama), Karmegham comes to know that Radha Ravi is his father and then it becomes a father-son conflict. Karmegham stood with the villagers and opposed his father and brother Shakthi. His sister, Mangai, loves a poor villager but Sakthi and his father are against her love. Sakthi kills her sister's lover, his sister goes mad and Karmegham calls the police. His brother escapes but the police shot him in an encounter. Karmegham gets married with Maheswari. His sister and mother die in a bomb blast planned by Karmegham's father. Karmegham kills his father to save at least his village.
