Savitri (Telugu) is a 1933 Telugu, drama film directed by C. Pullaiah. It was based on a popular stage play of Mylavaram Bala Bharati Samajam. It was the first film produced by East India Film Company with a huge budget of Rs. 75,000 in Calcutta and was a huge commercial hit. The film received an honorary diploma at Venice Film Festival.

The story is about Savitri and Satyavan from Mahabharata. According to the legend, Princess Savitri (Ramatilakam) marries Prince Satyavan despite a curse that foretells his death within a year. She manages to get Yama (Gaggaiah), the god of death, to restore her husband to life.

Synopsis

There was a Prince in Hindustan named Ashwapati, ruling over the kingdom of Madra. He married Queen Malavi. Even after a longtime they did not have a child. He invoked Savitri, his favorite deity and by the grace of god, they had a daughter; named as Savitri. She grew into a lovely maiden and was always playing in the palace and in the forest with her companion Vasantika. She often used to relate her dreams to her companion and once she portrayed in words the form and beauty of her beloved.

Ravana (Niranjan Sharma) orders Maricha to turn into a deer to entice Sita (Sona Chatterjee) with the notion of kidnapping her. Rama (Trilok Kapoor), Lakshman (Prabhash Joshi) and Sita are in the Panchavati forest for their fourteen year exile. Espying the golden deer sent by Ravana to lure Rama away, Sita asks Rama to get it. On hearing a cry of pain she sends Lakshman after his brother thinking he’s hurt. Ravan comes in the guise of a hermit begging alms and makes Sita step over the Lakshman Rekha (line), Lakshman had drawn around their cottage for her safety, asking her not to step beyond it. In their search for Sita, Ram and Lakshman meet Hanuman (S. N. Tripathi) whom they help in the fight between Sugriva and Bali. Hanuman then helps in finding Sita. He goes through several challenges in his devotion to Ram. Hanuman becomes a major factor in the battle between Rama and Ravana resulting in the victory of Rama and Shri Ram’s subsequent return to Ayodhya.

Lord Rama with Sita and Lakshman leave the palace at Ayodhya as directed by their father Dasharatha. Kaikeyi, Bharat's mother and Dashrath's second wife has asked that as a boon of her husband in order to place Bharat, Rama’s step brother on the throne. Bharata refuses to sit on the throne and goes to the forest to get Rama back. Rama reminds Bharat of his duty and declines to go back as he intends fulfilling his fourteen years of banishment in the forest. Bharat then insists on taking Rama’s Padukas (slippers) and returns to Ayodhya. He places Rama's Padukas on the throne, suggesting the rightful king and waits for Rama’s eventual return.

Subhadra (the sister of Balarama and Krishna) marries a Pandava named Arjuna, and their son Abhimanyu falls in love with Balarama's daughter, Sasirekha. The families decide to marry them when they reach adulthood. By the time Abhimanyu and Sasirekha grow up, the Pandavas have lost a dice game to the Kauravas due to Sakuni's manipulation. Krishna, furious at an action of Dussasana that has insulted Draupadi, saves Draupadi. Balarama teaches the Kauravas a lesson and later reaches Hastinapuram. Sakuni and Duryodhana respect Balarama; after manipulating him, they seek his favour by requesting that Sasirekha be married to Duryodhana's son Lakshmana Kumara. They intend to force Balarama and Krishna to support them if the Pandavas wage war after their fourteen-year exile. Unaware of this, Balarama accepts.
