The film represents the directorial debut of the four authors, that however were all experienced in other areas of the cinematographic industry (Manfredi and Bonucci as actors, Lucignani and Sollima as writers). The four episodes are based on short stories of well-known Italian novelists ( Mario Soldati, Alberto Moravia, Italo Calvino and Ercole Patti) and share the themes of love and betrayal.
The film was co-produced with West Germany where it was released with the title Schwierige Liebe.

A qualified surgeon is urgently called by a party in a small and inadequate private hospital to operate a man in critical condition because of a suicide attempt. This is the protagonist of the film, Benedict Parisi, whose first name seems prophetic of his story. In the waiting room is the companion Joan Micheli, pregnant with him, which—Benedict being alone in the world—gives consent to the risky operation. Her mother, Immaculate, however, hovers in the wings like a vulture, hoping he will die, because she aspires to marry Giovanna off to a lawyer friend of the family, as a better social and economic proposition.

Sandro (Nino Manfredi) et Laura (Eleonora Giorgi) sont mariés depuis 16 ans. Laura a hérité d'une librairie d'ouvrages anciens et d'art dans Venise. Leur couple est en crise et ils sont souvent au bord de la rupture. En pleine biennale de Venise, Sandro quitte le domicile conjugal. Il est recueilli par Zanetto (Georges Wilson), un marginal homosexuel autour duquel s'agglutinent artistes et marginaux. Dans le grenier, il découvre une photo très grand format d'une femme couchée, nue, de dos, qu'il trouve ressemblante à Laura. Voulant en avoir le cœur net, il revient chez lui en pleine nuit, découvre sa femme qui dort nue dans le lit et reste dubitatif. Il se met ensuite à enquêter sur cette fameuse photo, une quête qui lui fera parcourir tout Venise.
