Synopsis

The film is set in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution. It is told from the perspective of Ma Xiaojun nicknamed Monkey (played by Xia Yu; some of Monkey's experiences mimic director Jiang's during the Revolution), who is a teenage boy at the time. Monkey and his friends are free to roam the streets of Beijing day and night because the Cultural Revolution has caused their parents and most adults to be either busy or away and school system was extremely nonfunctional during the Cultural Revolution. Jiang Wen cryptically suggested that famous movement during the Cultural revolution that most elder young people were sent to the countryside. China was actively preparing for military due to the Vietnam War and claiming USSR to be revisionism. Since monkey and his friends were military children, their parents were off for military purposes. Most of the story happens during one summer, so the main characters are even more free because there is no school. The events of that summer revolves around Monkey's dalliances with his roguish male friends, and his subsequent angst-filled crush with one of the female characters, Mi Lan (Ning Jing). However, Mi Lan falls in love with monkey's friend, Liu Yiku.

The film is set in Beijing, 1902, in the last years of the Qing Dynasty. A young portrait photographer, Liu Jinglun (Xia Yu), chances on a newly arrived Englishman, Raymond Wallace (Jared Harris) in the capital. The story begins in the 1910s in early Republican China. Cheng Daqi, a young fruit vendor from Chuansha, is arrested and imprisoned after being framed for murder. He is saved by Mao Zai, an agent working for the Nationalist Government's secret police, after which he travels to Shanghai in search of a new life. In Shanghai, he meets Hong Shouting, a mob boss, and becomes one of Hong's apprentices. He also falls in love with Bao, a singer whom he eventually marries, even though his true love is actually Ye Zhiqiu, an opera actress from his hometown. At one point, Hong unknowingly offends the son of a general and is captured by the general's men. Cheng negotiates with the general and succeeds in striking up in a deal with him to release Hong and invest in their banking business. Hong feels so grateful to Cheng that he becomes sworn brothers with him later.

Le capitaine Liu Chuanjian (Zhang Hanyu) se prépare pour un vol de routine de Chongqing à Lhassa avec ses deux co-pilotes, Xu Ruichen (Oho Ou ) et Liang Peng (Du Jiang) ainsi que les hôtesses de l'air supervisées par Bi Nan (Yuan Quan ). Le capitaine Liu Chuanjian et son équipage sont les seuls espoirs de survie des 119 passagers.
