Baker plays an ex-con who takes part in the robbery of a racetrack and is caught and sent back to prison. The film depicts a harsh and violent portrayal of prison life that led to the film being banned in several countries, including Finland.
It was released in the United States as The Concrete Jungle.
Synopsis
Johnny Bannion, un spécialiste des hold-up est sur le point d'être libéré de prison où il a mis au point un "grand coup" qui doit rapporter une somme exceptionnelle. L'idée lui a été suggérée par un autre prisonnier, Snipe, qui fait désormais partie de sa bande. Lors de sa sortie de prison, Bannion est accueilli par un de ses complices, Carter. L'opération se déroule normalement, mais le comportement de Bannion n'inspire guère confiance et un de ses "amis" le dénonce à la police. À nouveau incarcéré, Bannion apprend que sa maîtresse, Suzanne, a été enlevée et finit par comprendre que l'"ami" en question n'est autre que Carter, et que celui-ci cherche à utiliser Suzanne pour l'obliger à révéler l'endroit où il a planqué le magot. Grâce à ses anciens collaborateurs, passés au service de Carter, Bannion sort de prison à seule fin de leur rendre l'argent volé dont il ne devra toucher, à présent, plus un seul sou. Prisonniers de Carter, Bannion et Suzanne parviennent à s'échapper mais ils sont abattus alors qu'ils tentaient de récupérer l'argent du hold-up.Actors

The film opens with two men running across a beach at dawn, it also appears that their hands are tied behind their backs. After several shots of a helicopter frantically searching the landscape, it becomes apparent that the two men are escapees of some kind. It is later revealed that their names are MacConnachie and Ansell. The two continue running across barren land, trying to escape the sight of the helicopter. MacConnachie continuously berates Ansell as they run, showing that he is the leader, more or less.

The story centers on a married Oxford professor, Stephen, who is experiencing a mid-life crisis. The world changes for him when he meets Anna, a beautiful young student, who is engaged to another of his students, William. Following a car accident outside Stephen's home in which William is killed and Anna is severely disoriented, she is obliged to remain with Stephen although his wife is out of town. Tony (James Fox), a wealthy young Londoner, hires Hugo Barrett (Dirk Bogarde) as his manservant. Initially, Barrett appears to take easily to his new job, and he and Tony form a quiet bond, retaining their social roles. Relationships begin shifting, however, and they change with the introduction of Susan (Wendy Craig), Tony's girlfriend, who seems to be suspicious of Barrett and to loathe all he represents. Barrett brings Vera (Sarah Miles), whom he presents as his sister, into Tony's household as a maidservant, but it emerges that Vera is actually Barrett's lover. Through Barrett's and Vera's games and machinations, they reverse roles with Tony and Susan; Tony becomes more and more dissipated, sinking further into what he perceives as their level, as the "master" and the "servant" exchange roles. In the final scene, Tony has become wholly dependent on Barrett, and Susan is exiled permanently from the house.
