Synopsis
Une petite ville de garnison dans le nord de l'Allemagne. Le professeur Niemeyer est directeur d'un gymnasium, il est surnommé par les élèves Traumulus à cause de ses idées surannées. Ses valeurs sont celles du siècle dernier, ses idées de décence, de l'éthique et de la morale suscitent chez eux acquiescements et émerveillements. Son élève préféré est Kurt von Zedlitz, descendant d'une famille de vieille noblesse. Encore une fois, le jeune homme retourne en douce au dortoir de l'école. Kurt fait croire à ses camarades qu'il a une histoire d'amour en ville.Actors

In 18th-Century Russia, the Czar, Paul, is surrounded by murderous plots and trusts only Count Pahlen. Pahlen wishes to protect his friend, the mad king, but because of the horror of the king's acts, he feels that he must remove him from the throne. Stefan, whipped by the czar for not having the correct number of buttons on his gaiters, joins with the count in the plot. The crown prince is horrified by their plans and warns his father, who, having no love for his son, places him under arrest for his foolish accusations. Pahlen uses his mistress, the Countess Ostermann, to lure the czar into the bedroom, where she tells the czar of the plot. The czar summons Pahlen, who reassures him of his loyalty. Later that night the count and Stefan enter his bedroom, and presently the czar is dead. But moments later Stefan turns a pistol on Pahlen. As the count lies dying on the floor, the countess appears and embraces Pahlen as he says, "I have been a bad friend and lover--but I have been a Patriot.

Sur la montagne se dresse la ferme, le "nid de vautours", dont le propriétaire profite du mariage avec une femme séduisante et beaucoup plus jeune, ainsi que la contrebande, avec laquelle il aimerait un jour acheter la taverne du village. Une épine dans le flanc de l'un et de l'autre est le jeune gendarme : il veut mettre fin à ce mariage comme à la contrebande - d'abord parce qu'il aime la beauté de la montagne et, deuxièmement, il a besoin d'un succès professionnel pour être promu. Cependant la femme se sent de plus en plus mal à l'aise d'être utilisé par le gendarme comme un leurre contre son mari et par les passeurs, contre son mari, cependant, pour distraire le gendarme. Elle mobilise donc ses sentiments féminins contre les deux et les incite à régler au couteau. Le mari trouve la mort, le gendarme est arrêté.
