D'abord réticent à quitter New York pour accepter un travail de directeur de l'American Mining Company située au Paragonia, un pays d'Amérique du Sud, Blaze Derringer change d'avis dès qu'il rencontre Juana de Castalar, la très belle fille du président du Paragonia. Lorsqu'il arrive là-bas, Derringer découvre que Juana est retenue prisonnière chez elle par Salza Espada, un usurpateur, ancien ministre de la guerre, pendant que l'ancien président attend la mort dans une prison au bord de la mer. Pete Prindle, son of Proteus, a vegetarian health food manufacturer wishes to marry Christine Cadwalader. She agrees. However, Proteus considers his son lazy, with no contributions to the company and therefore undeserving of his father's wealth. His daughters have their pictures in the newspaper of them promoting the company products. Cassius refuses to consent to his daughter's hand since he believes Pete to be lazy as well, with no real stake in his father's company. Pete tries hard to get in the newspaper: He fakes a car accident, which gets an insignificant mention in the paper. He wins a boxing match, which turns out to be an illegally run ring which ends up being raided by police.

Bill Gaynor (Fairbanks) follows Ethel (Percy), the girl he loves, to a sanitarium she is staying to recuperate from a nervous break down. Ethel had previously refused his proposal in favor of a socialite, Charles Riddles (Charles K. Gerrard). Bill hatches up a plan to save Ethel and the other hypochondriacs from the sanitarium, taking them on his yacht through the ruse of a smallpox scare. The yacht crashes onto an island, where Bill makes the invalids work for their own food and where they all overcome their illnesses. Upon discovering that Palm Beach is in the valley below them, Ethel and Charley go out to a party, but Ethel yearns for the natural life of the camp. She returns to Bill, finally accepting his offer for marriage.
