Add to a movie listA Study in Scarlet is a 1914 British silent drama film directed by George Pearson and starring James Bragington. It is based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel of the same name. It was the first film to feature Sherlock Holmes onscreen and is now considered to be lost.
A film of the same name was released in the U.S. on the following day (29 December 1914). It was directed by and starred Francis Ford, with his younger brother John Ford playing Dr. Watson.
As of 2014, the film is missing from the BFI National Archive, and is listed as one of the British Film Institute's "75 Most Wanted" lost films.

The film begins during the German air raids in London in 1940. An elderly Dr. John Watson tells his nurse the tale of an unrecorded case he shared with his friend Sherlock Holmes. In 1882, Holmes and Watson investigate a ship carrying gold which was reportedly destroyed by a monstrous giant octopus on the coast of Newhaven. They do not believe the first-hand accounts of the sole survivor of the attack, but nonetheless investigate. Holmes is informed by Inspector Lestrade that he has recently had contact with Holmes's estranged brother Thorpe, a former partner of Lestrade's who was paralyzed during a bank robbery seven years prior.

Several centuries later, the death of Sir Charles Baskerville is being reported by his best friend Dr. Richard Mortimer (Francis de Wolff) to Sherlock Holmes (Peter Cushing) and Dr. Watson (André Morell), who are willing to meet the new owner of Baskerville Hall, Sir Henry (Christopher Lee).
