The Red Lanterns (Greek: Τα κόκκινα φανάρια, translit. Ta Kokkina fanaria) is a 1963 Greek drama film directed by Vasilis Georgiadis and based on a play by Alekos Galanos. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also entered into the 1964 Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis

The film begins with a happy couple, Eleni and Petros, at an amusement park in Athens, celebrating their affair. Some time later, Eleni and Petros are together again on a beautiful day, but she has to go and so she leaves for her secret workplace: The Red Lanterns.

Homer, touriste américain et « philosophe amateur », passionné par la Grèce ancienne et ses philosophes, arrive en Grèce à la recherche de la Vérité. Dans un bar à rebetiko du Pirée, il croise la route d'Ilya, une prostituée très populaire, libre et indépendante, qui « reçoit » chaque jour de la semaine, sauf le dimanche (ce jour-là est réservé aux amis - d'où le titre du film). Homer, nouveau Pygmalion, décide de faire son éducation et de la remettre dans le droit chemin. Elle délaisse « ses amis », réaménage son intérieur, s'habille plus décemment. Homer l'accompagne à la représentation des tragédies grecques du Festival d'Athènes à l'Odéon d'Hérode Atticus.

Wonder Bar is set in a Parisian nightclub, with the stars playing the ‘regulars’ at the club. The movie revolves around two main story points, a romance and a more serious conflict with death, and several minor plots. All of the stories are enlivened from time to time by extravagant musical numbers. The more serious story revolves around Captain Von Ferring (Robert Barrat), a German military officer. Ferring has gambled on the stock market and lost, now broke after dozens of failed investments, he is at the Wonder Bar to try and pull a one night stand before killing himself the following day. Al Wonder (Al Jolson) knows about Ferring's plan.
