Synopsis
Mexico, années 1920. Le caudillo militaire à la tête du pays annonce la fin de son règne. Son candidat favori pour lui succéder est l'actuel Chef du gouvernement. Mais, à l'intérieur de son propre parti et à la Chambre des députés, d'autres hommes politiques soutiennent le ministre de la Guerre, le général Ignacio Aguirre. Ce dernier, afin de ne pas entrer en conflit avec le caudillo, donne sa démission. Malgré les pressions de ses partisans, il hésite à postuler sa candidature. Après l'attentat commis contre l'un de ses amis député et une violente altercation avec le général Jiménez, Chef du gouvernement, il modifie sa position. Ce qui lui vaut bientôt d'être arrêté par les fidèles du caudillo. Le général Elizondo, un de ses soutiens, organise son évasion. Toutefois, Aguirre finira par être trahi et sera assassiné sur la route de Toluca.Actors

The story begins with the closing moments of a rather dull government lecture and slide show on agricultural policy, after which the leader of the security police of a right-wing military-dominated government (Dux) takes over the podium for an impassioned speech describing the government's program to combat leftism, using the metaphors of "a mildew of the mind", an infiltration of "isms", or "sunspots".

2003. Les Etats-Unis et l'Angleterre s'apprêtent à intervenir en Irak car l’administration Bush prétexte, sans preuve plausible, que Saddam Hussein détient des armes de destruction massive. Employée des renseignements britanniques, au sein du Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), Katharine Gun reçoit dans ses courriels un mémo secret indiquant que les États-Unis sollicitent l'aide de la Grande-Bretagne pour rassembler des informations compromettantes sur certains délégués du Conseil de l'ONU afin de les obliger à voter en faveur de l'invasion. S'ils votent contre, elles seront divulguées publiquement. Stupéfaite, Gun hésite à révéler la machination liée à cette intervention illégale. Malgré tout, elle envoie anonymement le mémo à la presse afin de tenter d'empêcher la guerre qui s'annonce inutile et aux conséquences désastreuses. Mais, en choisissant d'exposer cette vaste conspiration politique, la lanceuse d'alerte met en danger sa vie, son couple, sa liberté et son sens du patriotisme. Car sa décision est considérée comme une trahison aux yeux des services secrets britanniques.

The time is the early-to-mid-1960s, the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. An unknown aircraft approaches North America from Europe. American bombers of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) are scrambled to their fail safe points near Russia. The bombers have orders not to proceed past their fail safe points without receiving a special attack code. The original "threat" is proven to be innocuous and recall orders are issued. However, due to a technical failure, the attack code is transmitted to Group Six, which consists of six Vindicator supersonic bombers and four escort fighters. Colonel Grady, the head of the group, tries to contact Omaha to verify the fail-safe order (called Positive Check), but due to Soviet radar jamming, Grady cannot hear Omaha. Concluding that the attack order and the radar jamming could only mean nuclear war, Grady commands Group Six towards Moscow, their intended destination.

In 1943 two Belarusian boys are digging in a sand field looking for abandoned rifles in order to join the Soviet partisan forces. Yustin, an old man, warns them not to dig (using sarcasm and reverse psychology). One of the boys, Flyora (Aleksei Kravchenko), finds an SVT-40 rifle. The next day partisans arrive at his house and take Flyora with them, to the dismay of Flyora's mother. The film is a fictional version of the dramatic events of the 1969 abduction of the American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick (played by Alan Arkin) in 1969. Elbrick was taken in Rio de Janeiro by the Revolutionary Movement 8th October (MR-8) with help of Ação Libertadora Nacional (ALN). Gabeira (played by Pedro Cardoso and named Paulo in the film) as a student joins the radical movement after the military takeover of the Brazilian government. He and his comrades, led by Andréia, gradually decided to kidnap the ambassador as a protest, and are shown mostly planning and executing the kidnapping. Paulo is portrayed as "the most intelligent and uncertain of the kidnappers.

In October 1962, U-2 surveillance photos reveal that the Soviet Union is in the process of placing missiles carrying nuclear weapons in Cuba. President John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and his advisers must come up with a plan of action to prevent their activation. Kennedy is determined to show that the United States will not allow a missile threat. The Joint Chiefs of Staff advise immediate U.S. military strikes against the missile sites followed by an invasion of Cuba. However, Kennedy is reluctant to attack and invade because it would very likely cause the Soviets to invade Berlin, which could lead to an all-out war. Citing The Guns of August, Kennedy sees an analogy to the events that started World War I, where the tactics of both sides commanders had not evolved since the previous war and were obsolete, only this time nuclear weapons are involved. War appears to be almost inevitable.
