Synopsis
Après la guerre de Sécession, un officier sudiste rentre chez lui. Il est heureux de retrouver ses proches, mais la joie de son retour est vite estompée. Le militaire découvre en effet que sa ville vit sous le joug d'une bande criminelle et d'un administrateur sans foi ni loi. Ecoeuré par le sort réservé aux habitants, l'officier décide de s'opposer à l'administrateur, qui le fait accuser de meurtre. La lutte entre les deux hommes s'annonce sans merci...Actors

Wedge Donovan (John Wayne) is a tough construction boss, building airstrips in the Pacific for the U.S. Navy during World War II. He clashes with his liaison officer, Lieutenant Commander Robert Yarrow (Dennis O'Keefe), over the fact that his men are not allowed to arm themselves against the Japanese. When the enemy lands in force on the island, he finally takes matters into his own hands, leading his men into the fray. This prevents Yarrow from springing a carefully devised trap that would have wiped out the invaders in a murderous machinegun crossfire, with minimal American losses. Instead, many of Donovan's men are killed unnecessarily.

Captain Jeff Dakin (George Montgomery) is shot down over Germany on a bombing raid as he sees his brother, Danny (Richard Graham) serving on the same aircraft, shot dead as he parachutes out of the stricken aircraft. During Prohibition, gangland kingpin Joe Krozac (Edward G. Robinson) returns from Europe with a new wife, Talya (Rose Stradner), who is unaware of his criminal background.
