Mr Govinda Shetty inherited the small grocery shop, “Bharath Stores” and was carrying on the family business with pride and such elan that the bus stop in front was named after it as ”Bharath stores stop” After alighting near that stop, she was surprised to find no trace of it anywhere there. Put a few children together to be themselves. Lo! They create a wonderful world of their own deriving immense pleasure in PLAYING - and 'learning' through it sub-consciously. Playing in open space is quite different from playing within the four walls of home. Open space provides greater scope for interaction, experimentation and learning besides multiplying the thrill of playing. There lies the imperative need for playgrounds. But where are the playgrounds! Thanks to the indiscriminate growth of concrete jungles of ever-growing cities, there is hardly any open space, let alone proper playgrounds - particularly in the localities where poor and middle class children reside.

In May 2000, I made my first film MUNNUDI (A Preface) in which I tried to examine the clash between the true religious tenets and demeaning customs. This was produced as a co-operative venture by a team of actors and technicians physically involved in the project. The overwhelming appreciation, two National Awards, Six Karnataka State Awards, entry in International Film Festivals of India, Kerala, Mumbai, Flanders (Belgium), Palm Springs (USA), and decent financial returns gave us confidence about the viability of such ventures as long as we are committed to meaningful cinema. This second film ATITHI comes now on similar co-operative basis.

Day-to-day practice of any religion goes as per the customs evolved through i find instances of “intelligent” interpretations of these very tenets by unscrupulous people to serve their own interests. One such instance is the exploitation of woman for the sheer thrill of man in a male dominated society taking advantage of the ‘custom’ of ‘marriage’ particularly when the woman is struck by ignorance, fear and poverty.
