Japon, 1253. Le moine bouddhiste Renchō après des années d'étude arrive à la conclusion que l'enseignement le plus élevé du Bouddha Shayamuni (fondateur de toutes les formes de Bouhhisme) se trouve dans le Sūtra du Lotus. Renchō prend alors le nom de Nichiren et fonde sa propre école. Il se met à prêcher aux coins des rues à des hommes ordinaires : paysans, pêcheurs, artisans... en s'opposant violemment aux autres sectes bouddhistes en place. Set in Kyoto, 20-year-old Cheiko (Shima Iwashita) works in her parents' wholesale silk goods store. Shūhei Hirayama (Chishū Ryū) is an ageing widower with a 32-year-old married son, Kōichi (Keiji Sada), and two unmarried children: 24-year-old daughter Michiko (Shima Iwashita) and a 21-year-old son Kazuo (Shin'ichirō Mikami). The ages of the children, and what they respectively remember about their mother, suggest that she died just before the end of the war, perhaps in the bombing of Tokyo in 1944-45. The film is set at the Akitsu health spa. Just after World War II, Shusaku Kawamoto (Hiroyuki Nagato) who is suffering from tuberculosis, has come to Akitsu to die. One young girl, Shinko (Mariko Okada), refuses to let him and invigorates him on the slow path to recovery. They fall in love, and in one of his darker moments, Shusaku asks Shinko to join him in double suicide. She accepts his love but not ready to die. Neither, it transpires, is Shusaku, and slowly they part. Time passes, Shinko finds out that Shusaku is married with a child, and he seems to have no interest in her any more.
