While returning to Madrid after an illicit tryst, a wealthy socialite housewife and a university professor accidentally strike a bicyclist with their car. Although they see that he is still alive after the accident, they know they cannot summon help for him without their affair being revealed. They drive away and leave him to die. After the bicyclist's death is reported in the newspaper, the pair deal with ever-rising tension, borne from their fear that their deeds will be exposed.

Ana Ruiz, une jeune comédienne, est vouée aux petits rôles d'ingénue dans une troupe théâtrale de troisième ordre. Malgré des conditions de vie, de transport et de travail exécrables, Ana veut encore croire en son étoile. Miguel, un jeune premier, se joint à la troupe par amour pour Ana. Mais, celle-ci se refuse à l'épouser par crainte de devoir renoncer à son métier. Miguel s'éclipse bientôt inopinément. Ana rencontre enfin un impresario, Marquez. Celui-ci lui promet une réussite assurée, à condition qu'elle devienne sa maîtresse. La jeune femme n'aime guère cette façon de satisfaire ses aspirations. Elle renonce donc à ces propositions et continue d'espérer en des jours meilleurs. Dans la troupe, lors d'un remplacement de la directrice malade, elle obtient un franc succès. Mais, on ne lui confie pas, pour autant, les premiers rôles.

The film opens with three men, José (Hugo Silva), Tony (Mario Casas), and Manuel (Jaime Ordóñez), robbing a pawn shop. The robbery initially seems to go well and the group collects a large bag full of gold rings and jewelry, only for the robbery to turn sour and for several people to die in the resulting gunfire. The men hijack a taxi and stow its unwilling driver in the trunk, then drive towards Spain's border with the intent to flee to France.

Un vieil homme, Emilio, est placé par sa famille dans une maison de retraite alors qu'il commence à avoir quelques problèmes de mémoire. Front russe, hiver 1943. la Division bleue est composée de 18 000 volontaires espagnols envoyés sur le Front de l’Est afin de prêter main-forte aux troupes allemandes. Arturo décèle des liens entre les assassinats et la franc-maçonnerie.
