A crippled puppeteer, Ivan Tsarakov (Barrymore), is frustrated that he will never dance ballet. He adopts a protegé, Fedor Ivanoff (Cook), whom he makes into the greatest dancer in the world. Fedor falls in love with a dancer, Nana Carlova (Marsh), but Tsarakov fears that she will ruin Fedor as a dancer. He tries to separate them and ultimately fires Nana from the ballet troupe. Fedor runs away with Nana to Paris, but Tsarakov has blacklisted him, and he cannot get ballet jobs and is reduced to working in a cabaret. Nana begs Tsarakov to give Fedor his job back. Tsarakov agrees, if Nana will leave Fedor and marry another man; she agrees. Fedor returns embittered; he sees Nana on opening night and realizes that she still loves him; he refuses to dance. Tsarakov threatens to kill him, but the ballet master, under the influence of drugs that Tsarakov has given him, kills Tsarakov. Fedor is reunited with Nana.

Johnny Brett (Fred Astaire) and King Shaw (George Murphy) are a dance team so down on their luck they're working in a dance hall for no money. Meanwhile, Clare Bennett (Eleanor Powell) is a big Broadway star. Owing to a case of mistaken identity, Shaw is offered the chance to be Clare's dancing partner in a new Broadway show, while it was really Johnny's dancing that producer Bob Casey (Frank Morgan) saw and wanted. The partnership breaks up, but Johnny sticks around to help out Shaw, who lets his newfound success go to his head. Clare eventually realizes that Johnny, and not Shaw, is the better dancer, and she falls in love after having lunch with him. When Shaw gets drunk on opening night, Johnny steps in and saves the show with a brilliant performance, though he lets King think he did it himself. Clare later tells Shaw the truth. Just before the next show, Clare discovers Shaw drunk and Johnny becomes the permanent replacement. After the show, they find out that King was pretending to be drunk so that Johnny would get the job.

Devant famille et amis, la jeune ballerine Nicole fait ses débuts sur la scène du théâtre de sa petite ville française. Mais un homme dans la salle dérange le spectacle, et Nicole, troublée, danse mal. Le perturbateur est un jeune et séduisant malfaiteur, Loulou, que la police surveille. Après le spectacle, il vient offrir des fleurs à Nicole et lui donne un rendez-vous nocturne. Chez elle, la ballerine, en pensant à ce rendez-vous, s'endort et se met à rêver. Dans un premier rêve, elle connait le succès à l'Opéra, mais Loulou la trahit, et elle est désespérée. Elle rêve ensuite qu'elle épouse un riche bijoutier qu'elle n'aime pas, prend Loulou pour amant et tout se termine mal. Dans un troisième rêve, elle épouse Loulou et connait le bonheur. Elle se réveille pour courir à son rendez-vous, mais elle arrive pour voir Loulou arrêté par la police. Le soir suivant, au théâtre, lors de sa deuxième représentation, riche de ce qu'elle a vécu et rêvé la nuit précédente, elle est acclamée par le public.
