À l'époque victorienne, un jeune couple, Constance et Joseph Barton, vivent dans une immense demeure au cœur de Londres. A l’origine complices et fusionnels, leurs relations, notamment sexuelles, se sont ternies depuis l’arrivée de leur fille Angelica, née dans des circonstances traumatisantes. Au détriment de son époux, Constance s'est mise à surprotéger leur enfant, s'éloignant progressivement de Joseph. Un matin, la petite fille fait une confidence inquiétante à ses parents : chaque nuit, une mystérieuse présence prédatrice vient lui rendre visite dans sa chambre. Si son père ne prête guère attention aux dires de sa fille, Constance, troublée, tente d’en savoir plus. Terrorisée qu’il puisse arriver malheur à son enfant, elle se met en tête de sonder les recoins obscurs de la maison afin de percer à jour la terrifiante menace. D'autant plus qu'elle commence elle aussi à voir ce spectre comme sa fille, une forme humaine qui laisse un ectoplasme ressemblant à du sperme sur son passage... Une manifestation surnaturelle qui intensifie ses peurs sexuelles et son anxiété liée à son enfant.

Lizzie Cronin is an unassertive and repressed woman, domineered by her controlling mother, Polly. Sometime in the late 1940s, wealthy businessman Hunt Shelton and his heavily pregnant wife get lost in the middle of West Virginia looking for some friends' summer house when Mrs. Shelton goes into labor. They end up going to the Jupiter Hollow Hospital but the doctor will not check them in because it is exclusively for employees of Hollowmade, the local furniture maker. Mr. Shelton buys the company on the spot. The Ratliffs, an impoverished couple, arrive moments later with Mrs. Ratliff also in labor. Both women give birth to twin girls. The doctor tends both births at the same time, and the elderly nurse gets confused and mixes the babies. Mr. Ratliff overhears the Sheltons deciding to name their daughters Rose and Sadie, and suggests the same names to his wife.

In 1949, Helene Hanff is in search of obscure classics and British literature titles that she has been unable to find in New York City. She notices an ad in the Saturday Review of Literature placed by antiquarian booksellers Marks & Co, located at the titular address in London. She contacts the shop, where chief buyer and manager Frank Doel fulfills her requests. A long-distance friendship develops over time between the two and between Hanff and other staff members, as well, including birthday gifts, holiday packages, and food parcels to compensate for post–World War II food shortages in Britain. Their correspondence includes discussions about topics as diverse as the sermons of John Donne, how to make Yorkshire Pudding, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the coronation of Elizabeth II.

The plot of Sir Henry at Rawlinson End revolves around attempts to exorcise the ghost of Humbert, the brother of drunken aristocrat Sir Henry (Trevor Howard). Humbert was accidentally killed in a drunken duck-shooting incident whilst escaping trouserless from an illicit tryst. It transpires that Humbert's ghost will not rest until it is supplied with replacement trousers. Until then the ghost walks the corridors of Rawlinson End, often accompanied by that of Humbert's dog Gums which has repossessed its own body, now stuffed and mounted on a trolley.
