In Monte Carlo, Marc, a handsome cardsharp, escapes American gangsters who have been ordered to kill him by the boss of a New York gang because he had an affair with the boss's wife. Marc hides in a mission for the poor where Barbara, a wealthy widow, finds him and hires him as her chauffeur. At Barbara's chateau, Melinda, Barbara's niece, becomes attracted to him. Marc discovers that Barbara is hiding her lover, Vincent, in the secret rooms and passageways of the chateau. She and Vincent (a bank robber sought by the police for murdering Barbara's husband) plan to murder Marc so that Vincent may use his passport in escaping to South America. Marc and Barbara begin an affair but are discovered by Vincent, who then kills Barbara but is himself killed by the American gangsters, who mistake him for Marc. Marc and Melinda plan to dispose of the two bodies, but when Melinda learns that Marc is planning to leave without her, she tricks the police into believing Marc guilty and forces him to hide in the chateau's secret rooms. He is her prisoner, just as Vincent had been her aunt's.

Bertrand Barabi (Henri Guybet) est un professeur de français suppléant et surveillant (« pion ») dans un lycée et internat de région. Il fréquente les cercles littéraires de sa ville et il est méprisé par ses élèves comme par les enseignants de son établissement. Bertrand Barabi ne vit que pour les beaux yeux de mademoiselle Thuillier, professeur de français. Dominique Benech (Claude Jade), sa voisine et mère esseulée d'un de ses élèves, qui nourrit à son égard de tendres sentiments, lui demande de donner des cours particuliers à son fils. Enthousiasmée par la lecture d'un des textes de Bertrand, Dominique l'encourage à écrire un roman. Bertrand poursuit la rédaction de son roman qu'il envoie bientôt à un éditeur parisien. Le livre est récompensé. Grâce à son pseudonyme, Bertrand garde un temps l'anonymat, mais les journalistes ont tôt fait de révéler l'identité de ce "Goncourt introuvable". Cependant, le succès ne tourne pas la tête de Bertrand. Et c'est avec la complicité de ses élèves qu'il ridiculise même ceux qui lui ont fait du tort, avant de se marier avec la discrète et tendre Dominique.

A simple civil servant Léon, who has the unusual ability to walk through walls, falls madly in love with a hotel thief by the name of Susan. He poses as the notorious gangster Garou-Garou to attempt to woo her affections, but is arrested and sent to prison. As a prisoner he annoys the guards by walking in and out of his cell, and keeps asking Susan to cease her criminal way of life. As fundamentally being an honest and law-abiding citizen, he eventually handles back everything he has stolen, is acquitted by the court, and becomes famous and respected. When he learns that Susan is planning to return to England and start a new life, he decides to confess his emotions to her. However, the couple is interrupted by a sudden rush of journalists. Trying to escape in a building, they get cornered on a corridor, and Léon pushes Susan through a nearby wall. But by doing this, he loses his own wall-walking ability, and the film concludes.
