Louis Banks (born 11 February 1941 as Dambar Bahadur Budaprithi) is a Grammy Award-nominated film composer, record producer, jazz musician-keyboardist and singer. In the midst of central London, a successful Indian restaurant called 'Gaylord' is run by a Londoner of Indian origin called Pinu (Vinay Pathak) . A simple soul at heart, Pinu has many complexes - a special one being that he is a virgin and has experienced no intimacy with a woman. He agrees to come to India to have an arranged marraige with Payal (Snigdha Pandey), but is crest fallen when his Fiancée elopes on the wedding day, leaving a note behind ridiculing Pinu and his personality. This fuels Pinu's biggest fear of being laughed at by people... an ever-repeating phenomenon with him. Pinu is quite an introvert and has no real friends...the closest he has ever gotten to a friendship is with his foster brother Rajat (Siddharth Makkar), who is quite a contrast to his own personality. A casual air about him, he is the lead singer of a rock band. Rajat is very fond of Pinu, though is often a source of annoyance to him as he finds Pinu really funny.

Bablu Chaudhary (Shah Rukh Khan), a bubbly young man, is an aspiring chef. He gets a job as the lead chef at a hotel and meets the charming Sonia Kapoor (Juhi Chawla), the hotel manager. They bond and Bablu falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Manu, (Shah Rukh Khan in a double role), Bablu's lookalike, is a ruthless criminal who has escaped from jail to kill his partners, who have betrayed him. One day, when Bablu takes Sonia out for lunch, he gets arrested because the police think that Bablu is Manu. Bablu is able to prove his true identity but not before Manu hears of his duplicate and decides to take his place by killing him. There is a lot of confusion about who is who by all associated with the two men, including Sonia, Bablu's mother Bebe (Farida Jalal), and Manu's girlfriend, Lily (Sonali Bendre). In a final confrontation between Manu and Bablu, Lily shoots Manu dead after realizing he is not good at heart and does not truly love her like Bablu loves Sonia.
