Born in Seattle, Washington, Frances Elena Farmer is a rebel from a young age, winning $100 in 1931 from The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for a high school essay called God Dies. In 1935, she becomes controversial again when she wins (and accepts) an all-expenses-paid trip to the USSR to visit the Moscow Art Theatre. Determined to become an actress, Frances is equally determined not to play the Hollywood game: she refuses to acquiesce to publicity stunts, and insists upon appearing on screen without makeup. She marries her first husband, Dwanye Steele, despite being advised not to, but cheats on him with alleged Communist Harry York on the night of her hometown's premiere of Come and Get It. Her defiance attracts the attention of Broadway playwright Clifford Odets, who convinces Frances that her future rests with the Group Theatre.

NYC dress manufacturer Jack (Warden) is in debt to loan shark "Mr Eddie" (Kiel), who tells him that Jack's son Bobby (O'Neal) must join the firm as "new blood", despite Bobby's complete lack of knowledge of the dress business, and current career as a Professor of American Literature at a small liberal arts college. Kidnapped by two of Eddie's goons, Bobby is forced to come back to the city and join his father's business. Bobby complicates matters by falling in love with Mr Eddie's neglected wife, the cultured Lira (Melato). After a late-night tryst at the home of Eddie and Lira, Bobby accidentally invents the solution to his father's problem: see-through denim blue jeans with strategically placed holes in the rear that expose one's backside. The fickle public goes crazy over the "sexy" new style. "Fine Fashions" repays its debt to Eddie, and Bobby goes back to his college. However, Lira follows him, and Eddie finds out about them and heads to the school in a murderous rage. Jack follows anxiously, and the last quarter of the film involves Lira stepping in for an ill singer to perform the role of Desdemona in the school's version of the opera Otello. Eddie knocks out the male lead and himself takes the role of Othello. Jack and Bobby then do their best to stay alive while trying to protect Lira from her jealous husband.

In 1893 London, popular writer Herbert George Wells (Malcolm McDowell) displays a time machine to his skeptical dinner guests. After he explains how it works (including a "non-return key" that keeps the machine at the traveler's destination and a "vaporizing equalizer" that keeps the traveler and machine on equal terms), police constables arrive at the house searching for Jack the Ripper. A bag with blood-stained gloves belonging to one of Herbert's friends, a surgeon named John Leslie Stevenson (David Warner), leads them to conclude that Stevenson might be the infamous killer. Wells races to his laboratory, but the time machine is gone.

Anthony "Tony" Manero (John Travolta) is a 19-year-old Italian American man from the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. In 1914, going from a lawyer to a writer, and then to a film director, is the career path on which we find Leo Harrigan (Ryan O'Neal). But Leo has problems as well, such as being hopelessly smitten with his leading lady, who chooses to grab his attentions by getting herself engaged to his vulgar and ignorant leading man, Buck Greenaway (Burt Reynolds). Leo is forced to move from New Jersey to California to keep one step ahead of the Motion Picture Patents Company, who are out to destroy any non-authorized equipment violating the Edison Trust. Leo finally settles in with other filmmakers in Hollywoodland, California, and makes a series of dramatic, romantic, and comedic shorts as throwaways. While initially believing movies are just a brief flickering kind of entertainment, Leo is profoundly affected by the 1915 world premiere of D.W.
