Tadao Ikeda (池田忠雄 , Ikeda Tadao) (5 February 1905 - 5 May 1964) was a Japanese screenwriter and film director. After graduating from Waseda University, he joined the Shochiku studio and came to prominence writing screenplays for such directors as Yasujirō Ozu, Mikio Naruse, Kōzaburō Yoshimura, and Yasujirō Shimazu. He also directed a few films.

Tashiro (Chishū Ryū), Tamekichi (Reikichi Kawamura), and O-tane (Chōko Iida) are among the residents of a poor district of Tokyo that has been severely damaged in the bombing raids of 1944-45. They live on the economic margins of a society devastated by years of war: Tashiro is a street fortune teller, Tamekichi mends pots and pans and also buys and sells whatever he can get hold of, and O-tane is a widow who sells what odds and ends of hardware she can obtain.

Kiyoshi Miyauchi, un jeune officier de bonne famille est envoyé dans une usine d'une petite ville de la péninsule d'Izu au sud-ouest de Tokyo. Mais en ces temps de guerre les personnes déplacées sont nombreuses et il est difficile de se loger. Tokujiro le marchand de vélo et sa femme Oshige lui suggèrent d'aller voir Bunkichi Sugiyama, un petit restaurateur travaillant près du temple. Ce dernier est veuf et vit avec ses deux filles Tamiko et Shizue en âge de se marier. Bunkichi accepte d'héberger en pension sous son toit le jeune homme contre l'avis de sa sœur Okin qui trouve cela inapproprié. Kiyoshi s'installe donc chez Bunkichi et bientôt la vie de la petite famille s'en trouve perturbée.

Shuhei Horikawa (Chishū Ryū) works as a mathematics schoolteacher in a middle school. A widower, he has a ten-year-old son named Ryohei (Haruhiko Tsuda), who studies in the same school. The upper-class Toda family celebrates the 69th birthday of their father with a commemorative photoshoot at their outdoor garden. Unfortunately, shortly after the photo session, the father, Shintaro Toda (戸田 進太郎 Toda Shintarō; Hideo Fujino), suffers a fatal heart attack. After his death his eldest son, Shinichiro (進一郎 Shin'ichirō; Tatsuo Saito) announces that as their father had acted as a guarantor for a company which has gone bankrupt, they must help pay off that company's debts. The family decides to sell off all their late father's properties and antiques, leaving only an old house by the sea. Meanwhile, the mother (Ayako Katsuragi) and the youngest daughter Setsuko (節子; Mieko Takamine) would go and stay with Shinichiro and his wife. The unmarried second brother Shojiro (Shin Saburi) takes the opportunity to move away from Japan to Tianjin, China (which had been occupied by Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese war).

Yuzo Hibiki est un homme d'affaires brillant, issu d'un milieu pauvre, il a financé ses études en travaillant pour la clinique de Yasuhide Shima à Tokyo. Quand ce dernier tombe malade et que la clinique connaît de graves difficultés de gestion, il lui en confie la direction, plutôt qu'à son dispendieux fils aîné Yasuhiko. Yuzo redresse avec fermeté la situation, aidé en cela par l’infirmière Gin. Cette dernière en effet, tombée sous le charme de Yuzo, devient sa complice et l’informe sur tout. De son côté, Yuzo Hibiki est attiré par la fille de Yasuhide, Keiko. À la mort du vieux Yasuhide Shima, son fils Yasuhiko et le chirurgien Sasajima, lui aussi amoureux de Keiko, tentent de reprendre le contrôle de la clinique.

The film starts in the rural town of Shinshū in 1923. A widow, Tsune (O-Tsune) Nonomiya (Chōko Iida), works hard at a silk production factory to provide for her only son, Ryōsuke. Kihachi (Takeshi Sakamoto) wanders around the industrial flatlands of Tokyo's Koto district with his two young sons, Zenko (Tokkan Kozo) and Masako (Takayuki Suematsu), looking for work. Unable to find a job, Kihachi relies on his sons to catch stray dogs for the reward money, but Zenko wastes the bounty buying himself a much-desired officer's cap.
