Thomas Michael "Tom" Wright (born 22 June 1983) is an award-winning Australian producer, actor, writer, director, and theatre designer. He is the co-founder and director of The Black Lung Theatre and Whaling Firm.
Biography
Wright was born in Melbourne, the eldest of three children.
He featured as John Mitcham in Jane Campion's series Top of the Lake (2013) - for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2013 US Critics Choice Awards. He is currently filming the US adaptation of Danish series The Bridge, about the US / Mexican border cities of El Paso and Juarez. He recently completed filming the feature Everest, a film based on the 1996 'Into Thin Air' tragedy for Universal Studios and Working Title Films, opposite John Hawkes, Jason Clarke and Josh Brolin.
He featured as murdered journalist Brian Peters, one of the 'Balibo five' in Robert Connolly's Balibo (2009) and as Thomas Bodenham in the film Van Diemen's Land (film) (2009).
Wright is considered a theatre veteran and has directed and designed productions for Adelaide Festival, Malthouse Theatre, Belvoir St. Theatre, Queensland Theatre Co. and Brisbane Festival, and others - and has played lead roles for The Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company and in 2011 the Sydney Theatre Company production of Baal, directed by Simon Stone.
He founded The Black Lung Theatre and Whaling Firm in 2006 - an award winning independent company.
He was the writer, designer and director of Doku Rai - a co-production with East Timorese companies Liurai Foer (King Bin) and Galaxie. The production was created over three months on the remote island of Atauro off mainland East Timor. Doku Rai has been presented at numerous major international arts festivals. The film sequences in Doku Rai were co-directed with award-winning filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson. Doku Rai played to resounding public and critical acclaim at Darwin Festival, Melbourne Arts House, Adelaide Festival, Brisbane Festival and Sydney Carriageworks. Doku Rai has been named one of the best productions of 2012 and 2013 by Time Out and The Monthly Magazine, and nominated for Best Production of the year at the 2013 Green Room Awards.
