Ugo Ceseri (1893–1940) was an Italian stage and film actor. He appeared in forty two films between 1931 and his death in 1940. In 1934 he appeared in the play 18 BL, an attempt to create a mass theatre by the Fascist government of Italy. The play was directed by Alessandro Blasetti and featured 2,000 amateur actors.

L'action du film se déroule entre 1890 et 1922. Sur un paquebot à destination de l'Amérique du Sud, des émigrés italiens lient connaissance. Parmi ceux-ci, Maria Brunetti et son père Andrea, abordent un médecin lassé des incessants conflits politiques italiens. Andrea est employé plus tard à la construction d'une ligne ferroviaire et décédera des suites d'une épidémie. Sa fille, d'abord institutrice, sera ensuite contrainte d'exercer un emploi de chanteuse de cabaret. Cette expérience, plutôt dégradante, la conduit vers une mission chrétienne dans laquelle elle retrouve le docteur Lorenzo Casati rencontré autrefois sur le bateau. Au cours de nombreuses expériences, constituées d'affrontements sociaux et de luttes en tous genres, Maria et Lorenzo finiront par s'aimer, se marier et auront un fils... La vie leur réservera pourtant de nouvelles épreuves.

After a couple of projects had either been postponed or fallen through for Blasetti, it was suggested that he should make a film about the navy in peacetime. The result is this strange film, which at the outset plays like a propaganda piece for the might of the Italian navy, only to veer off into high melodrama, as it zeroes in on Commander Corrado Valeri (Gino Cervi), and his conflict between duty and the jealousy of his wife. There are comedic asides, a visit to a North African club, affording Blasetti to contribute the first scenes of nudity in Italian film, and there are moments of heroics, including a mission to rescue the doomed crew of a wrecked submarine. As if all of that was not more than enough, the film features a star-studded cast including Evi Maltagliati, Gianfranco Giachetti, Doris Duranti, Elisa Cegani (in her debut), and even a brief cameo by Blasetti himself.
