William Hedgcock (July 4, 1883 – September 29, 1947) was an American sound engineer. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Special Effects on the film The Invisible Man Returns at the 13th Academy Awards. He worked on more than 90 films during his career.

Alex Gregor (Lon Chaney Jr.) is a stage mentalist performer, known to the audience as "Gregor the Great". One night, while performing live on stage, placing his own fiancé into a hypnotic trance, he is ridiculed by a sceptical member of the audience. Simultaneously, the show is aired live to a radio audience. The man, clearly plastered, starts accusing Alex of being a fake. Alex reacts to this accusation by hypnotizing the man, ending up accidentally killing him. Even though the medical examiner concludes that the drunken man died from a heart attack, Alex is ridden with guilt and confesses to have murdered the man. Ashamed of himself and what he has done, he decides to breaks off the enagagement to his girlfriend.

The film focuses on the exploits of the vengeful Dr. Gustav Niemann (Boris Karloff), who escapes from prison. He is helped by the hunchback Daniel (J. Carrol Naish), for whom he promises to create a new, beautiful body. The two murder Professor Lampini (George Zucco), a traveling showman, and take over his horror exhibit. To exact revenge on Bürgermeister Hussman (Sig Ruman), who had once caused his imprisonment, Niemann revives Count Dracula (John Carradine). Dracula seduces Hussmann's granddaughter-in-law Rita (Anne Gwynne) and kills Hussmann himself, but in a subsequent chase, Niemann disposes of Dracula's coffin, causing the vampire to perish in sunlight.

During World War II, aircraft factory worker Barry Kane (Robert Cummings) is accused of starting a fire at the Stewart Aircraft Works in Glendale, California, an act of sabotage that killed his friend Mason (Virgil Summers).
