MK2 est une société de production, de distribution et ventes internationales de films, et d’exploitation de salles de cinémas, fondée en 1974 par Marin Karmitz, aujourd’hui dirigée par ses fils Nathanaël Karmitz et Elisha Karmitz.
Le réseau de cinémas MK2 est présent à Paris depuis 1974, avec dix cinémas et soixante-cinq écrans et dans le Sud de l’Espagne depuis 2014, après le rachat du réseau Cinesur (neuf cinémas). MK2 exploite un catalogue de six cents films, parmi lesquels des œuvres produites, coproduites ou distribuées de réalisateurs tels que Charlie Chaplin, Claude Chabrol, François Truffaut, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Abbas Kiarostami, ou encore Xavier Dolan.

Pierre Belcroix and Marcel Blanc are violinists and lifelong friends living in Paris in the 1920s. While Marcel has become famous and Pierre has not, both are happy with their lives. Pierre is happily married to Romaine, a stylish young flapper. However, Marcel meets and falls in love with her, which Marcel little suspects. Romaine carries on her affair with Marcel, even as Pierre falls ill, which she may have deliberately exacerbated with her treatment in order to murder him. Soon Marcel goes on a concert tour, and Romaine abandons Pierre for a romantic tryst. When Marcel returns, Romaine reconsiders the affair, and realizes that she loves both Pierre and Marcel. She decides that she does not want to hurt either her husband or her lover, and as no other solution seems possible, she commits suicide. Three years later, Pierre visits Marcel to seek the truth, and Marcel tells him that no illicit affair occurred, thereby honoring her memory.

The 'Stalker' (Alexander Kaidanovsky) works in some unclear area in the indefinite future as a guide who leads people through the 'Zone', a vicinity in which the normal laws of reality no longer fully apply. The Zone contains a place called the 'Room', said to grant the wishes of anyone who steps inside. The area containing the Zone is sealed off by the government and great hazards exist within it. At home with his wife and daughter, the Stalker's wife (Alisa Freindlich) begs him not to go into the Zone but he ignores her pleas. In a rundown bar, the Stalker meets his next clients for a trip into the Zone. The 'Writer' (Anatoly Solonitsyn) and the 'Professor' (Nikolai Grinko) agree to put their fate into the hands of the Stalker. Their specific names do not come up as they all agree to refer to each other pseudo-anonymously by just their professions.

The film is divided into three main sections, each focusing on one of the three main characters. A prologue introduces Paul Godard, a filmmaker, and his estranged girlfriend, Denise Rimbaud. After Paul leaves the deluxe Swiss hotel where he is staying and rebuffs the sexual advances of a male hotel attendant, the film shifts to its first proper section, "The Imaginary," and follows Denise as she makes arrangements to work at the newspaper run by an old friend, or perhaps an old lover, in the Swiss countryside. Denise is struggling with her choice of giving up the apartment she shares with Paul and leaving her job at a television station, where Paul also works. She is also trying to begin a new project, possibly a novel. In the course of her arrangements, including securing a room at a farm in the countryside, Denise realizes she is late to pick up the author and filmmaker Marguerite Duras, and telephones Paul to ask if he can do it for her. Despite being put off by Denise's intention to leave him and their apartment, he agrees.
