Synopsis
La métropole de Singapour ne cesse de s'agrandir depuis 30 ans par des terres nouvelles et des îles prises sur le littoral de la mer. Wang Bi Cheng est un ouvrier chinois qui blessé à la main devient ensuite chauffeur d'une camionnette de service, où il doit conduire des ouvriers immigrés basanés (venus d'Asie du Sud-Est, du Bangladesh, etc) sur les lieux des nouvelles terres à cimenter. Il disparaît, et Lok qui est un détective aguerri est alors chargé par son gouvernement, aidé d'un collègue chinois, d'une enquête confidentielle car politique, sur deux disparitions d'ouvriers du BTP dont Wang est l'un d'eux. Ces deux disparus sont tous déclarés paresseux, négligents, puis en fuite, par leur patron entrepreneur qui a gardé leurs passeports pour qu'ils ne les perdent pas et qui déclare au policier qu'il est tout à fait régulier et qu'il n'y a pas lieu d'enquêter.Comments

Police psychologists review recordings of a man (Robert De Niro), who states his name as Detective David Fisk, the "Poetry Boy" killer. The Poetry Boy earned the moniker for his modus operandi of murdering criminals and leaving short poems with their bodies. Fisk reveals that he looks up to his partner of almost 30 years, Tom Cowan (who the audience is led to believe is the character portrayed by Al Pacino), and considers him to be his role model of how a cop should be. Pacino's character is known by the nickname "Rooster" and De Niro's by "Turk," and they are referred as such outside of the recordings.

An aircraft carrying young military school cadets returning home crash lands into the sea near a remote, uninhabited, jungle island in the Pacific Ocean. Among the survivors is the pilot, Captain Benson (Michael Greene), who is seriously injured and delirious. Meanwhile, on the beach, an overweight cadet, whose real name is never revealed, nicknamed “Piggy” (Danuel Pipoly), finds a conch seashell and takes it to the grouped cadets, who adopt it to signal the right to speak and be heard by the group. The senior cadet, and one of the elder boys, Cadet Colonel Ralph (Balthazar Getty), organizes a meeting to discuss surviving their predicament. Ralph and Jack (Chris Furrh) emerge dominant, with Ralph's seniority in rank making him the one in charge. They start a fire using Piggy's glasses to try and alert any passing craft. Tensions begin to grow between Ralph and Jack.

Dans un contexte politique particulièrement explosif, le journal conservateur milanais "Il Giornale" affiche envers et contre tout son soutien à la classe patronale. Se préparant à des élections qui s'annoncent houleuses, la rédaction, menée par le peu scrupuleux Bizanti, met d'ailleurs tout en œuvre pour orienter l'opinion publique, profitant d'une sombre affaire de crime sexuel pour l'émouvoir. Le sinistre fait divers est ainsi monté en épingle et Mario Boni, jeune militant communiste soupçonné du meurtre, est très vite désigné comme coupable en première page afin de mieux discréditer les divers courants gauchistes. Intrigué par de criantes anomalies dans la façon dont est menée l'enquête, le jeune reporter Roveda, d'abord docile, finit par démonter la vaste machination médiatique dans laquelle se sont engagés ses employeurs et découvre le véritable coupable.

Frank White, a drug lord, is riding into New York in a limousine after being released from Sing Sing. Bookstore manager John Harman (Brent) reprimands his attractive young clerk Ruby Bruce (Dors) for being late to work. Later the same day Ruby catches small-time crook Jeff Hart (Reynolds) trying to steal a rare book. Instead of turning him in she accepts a date with him. When Harman later tries to kiss Ruby she tells Hart who forces Ruby to blackmail Harman. When he refuses to pay off, Jeff tells Ruby to write a letter to Harman's sick wife, which causes her death from a heart attack. Dazed by the tragedy, Harman gives Ruby 300 pounds when she renews her demands. Jeff catches Ruby hiding part of the money, kills her and hides her body in a packing case. Harman discovers Ruby's body and, thinking he will be accused, flees in panic. He enlists the help of his secretary Stella (Chapman) who helps him hunt for clues. When Stella stumbles on Hart alone she is nearly killed by him but Harman arrives in time to save her. The police arrest Hart.
