Aavarampoo is a 1992 Tamil drama film directed by Bharathan. The film features Vineeth, Nandhini and Nassar in lead roles. The film, produced by K. R., had musical score by Ilaiyaraaja and was released on 5 June 1992. The film is a remake of the critical acclaimed 1980 Malayalam film Thakara.

Synopsis

Sakkarai (Vineeth) is a mentally ill boy and an orphan. Most of the villagers take advantage of his innocence. Sakkarai works under his chief Thevar (Nassar) who has two wife. After a dispute with his first wife Lakshmi (Valsara Menon), he got married with another woman (Sulakshana). Sakkarai develops a soft corner for Thevar's daughter Thamarai (Nandhini). Achari (Goundamani), who has been humiliated by Thamarai, brainwashes and manipulates Sakkarai. So Sakkarai has a physical relation with Thamarai. Later, Thevar finds out their relationship and beats the innocent Sakkarai. Later, Thevar arranges his daughter's marriage with Senkodan, a drunkard. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Saktivelu (Kamal Haasan) returns home to his father, Periya Thevar’s (Sivaji Ganesan) village in Tamil Nadu, after completing his education in London. Angarajyam, under King Lomapadan (Babu Antony) is suffering from severe drought. There had been no rain for past 12 continuous years as the result of a curse by a Brahmin. The film begins with king Lomapadan's visit to Rajaguru (Nedumudi Venu) requesting him to return to Champapuri, the royal capital of Angarajya. Chitrangadan (Ashokan), the son of rajaguru was in love with Vaisali (Suparna Anand), daughter of a devadasi, which was against the social customs. Rajaguru had migrated away from capital with an aim of separating his rebellious son from his lover. Now, with the repeated requests from King, Rajaguru decides to shift back to Champapuri to perform a yagam to please Lord Indra, the god of rain. On the night of arrival at the capital, Rajaguru, gets a mystic vision, in which his guru advices him to bring Rishyashrungan (Sanjay Mitra), the only son of Mahirshi Vibhandakan to perform a mahayagam at Angarajyam. Only the son of Vibhandakan can now save the nation. Rishyashrungan is a teenager, living deep inside a dense forest, along with his father, who is famous for his spiritual powers. Vibhandakan had taken all care to keep his son away from the rest of the world, since the day he was born. Rishyashrungan had not met any human being in his whole life apart from his father, and is unaware of the world outside his ashram inside the deep forest. Lomapadan and his group of ministers decide to send a beautiful girl to seduce and bring Rishyashrungan to Champapuri. Rajaguru, who had a deep rooted anger against Vaisali (Suparna Anand) asks king to send her to the forest. Vaisali, daughter of Malini (Geetha), a famous dancer in the palace, is also the illegitimate daughter of King Lomapadan, which he is unaware of. Malini, on the demand of the king sets out with her daughter to the forest. While the rest of the team waits outside the deep forest, Vaisali sets in and meets Rishyashrungan and attempts to seduce him with her looks. He unaware of the existence of any human being on the earth, is easily carried away by her exotic looks. But by evening Vibhandakan smells out the trouble and warns his son about the danger. But the teenager is again lost by the charm of Vaisali. But soon realizing his mistake, Rishyashrungan decides to take up deep meditation to attain mental power to win over Vaisali, whom he mistakes to be a Mayavi, who had come to prevent him from gaining eternal happiness and salvation. Vaisali, who by now had started loving him seriously is completely broken by seeing him on meditation in midst of fire. She, in her final attempt starts dancing sensuously in front of Rishyashrungan, and succeeds in alluring and taking him to Angarajyam. But the boy hermit regains his sense at the boat and is about to curse her. Malini, by then begs for mercy. On seeing Malini, another woman, the teenager hermit is surprised. Vaisali explains her mission to Rishyashrungan and convinces him of his power to bring rain. They start back to the kingdom. They are welcomed royally at the capital. King Lomapadan welcomes Rishyashrungan personally and takes him to the stage where the yaga has to be performed. Malini, who by now is expecting the King to accept Vaisali as his child tries to move towards him, but is stopped by the Rajaguru. Rishyashrungan performs the yagam successfully, and it rains heavily by the time havan ends. The entire nation is now on joyous mood and they celebrate by singing and dancing. Vaisali and her mother Malini, are completely forgotten by the King now. The Rajaguru, by then advises the king to offer Princess Shanta (Parvathi), his daughter to Rishyashrungan, which means that the offspring of Rishyashrungan will rule Angarajyam after the time of Lomapadan. The King obeys the order and announces the marriage of the young saint and the princess, which is welcomed by the crowd whole heartedly. Vaisali, who, with in this time was completely in love with the saint is heartbroken. Her attempts to reach the king ends in vain and she along with her mother falls down on the ground. The mother is trampled to death by crowd. The crowd is no more bothered about them and the heavy rain continues.

The film narrates a sad story of a Malayali couple. Ravunni Nair and Saraswathi Amma were colleagues teaching in the same school who eventually got married, when the former was 45 and the latter was 40. The greatest sorrow of their life was that they were childless. After retirement from school, Maya comes to stay with them. Paramu, a young man is living with his grandfather, mother and his sister who is dumb. His family lost their property to his uncle who killed his father in the explosion of explosives set for a festival long back. His sister lost her normal life due to a man who tried to rape her during a festival which also happened long back and when Paramu was a child. The man who raped her, Shankunni is an assistant of Parmu’s uncle. One day on the request of his grandfather for the Chilambu (a special ornament of religious significance) Paramu sets off to the place of his ancestral home where his uncle is enjoying their family properties and ancestral home and where the chilambu is now. His childhood friend and fiancée Ambika (daughter of his uncle) was waiting for Paramu’s return. She is overjoyed on Paramu’s return. The friendship and love rekindles between the two. On his return Paramu makes his point clear that he has come for nothing but the chilambu. But his resolute and cruel uncle rejects him and threatens to kill him if he comes again for the same demand. Meanwhile his childhood frineds Ramu and Sahadevan also rekindles their friendship with Paramu. To them Ramu tells why he has come there. When Paramu’s intervention becomes unbearable for his uncle he tries to sell off the chilambu to a foreigner and a Christian jewellery merchant. But after experiencing some traumatic supernatural incidents the night after he decided to sell the chilambu, he decides to abandon the idea of selling the chilambu. The Christian jewellery merchant also experiences similar supernatural incidents. Later the uncle decides to appoint someone for his security since Paramu is a valiant martial art expert. He calls his nephew who knows Karate for his security. One day Ambika comes to Paramu and tells him that she will give him the chilambu if he comes to the ancestral home at night upon her signal. He does the same way. When they meet Ambika tells him her wish that she wants to bear his child thereby cleansing the brunt upon the ancestral home. Initially he drops the idea but ultimately succumbs to her wish. But sooner she discovers Paramu is carrying martial weapons around his waist. Realizing how deep his wishes about taking the chilambu back to his family, she tells him that she will show where the chilambu is and gives him a set of keys. When he tries to open the door of the room where the chilambu is kept the light apparatus which was in Ambika’s hand slips and everyone comes to the scene. But Paramu somehow manages to take the chilambu with him. After that, the night ensues his fight between him and the people arranged by his uncle. In that fight many of them including the man who tried to rape her sister and others get killed or injured. In the end he rescues Ambika from her parents who try to detain her, and leaves the place victoriously with the chilambu and Ambika.
