Le Père Serge (en russe : Отец Сергий) est un film soviétique en noir et blanc réalisé par Igor Talankine d'après la nouvelle éponyme de Léon Tolstoï. Sortie en 1978 cette adaptation est consacrée à la célébration des 150 ans de Tolstoï.

Synopsis

Le héros principal du film est le prince Stepan Kassatski, un jeune officier ardent et fier, un grand admirateur du tsar. La veille de son mariage il apprend que sa fiancée était la maîtresse du souverain. Profondément déçu, Kassatski prononce le vœu monastique et quitte la capitale. Il s'appelle désormais père Serge et mène une vie solitaire. Des rumeurs au sujet d'un ancien officier entré dans les ordres se rependent. Une belle femme dépravée tente de le séduire et il est obligé de se couper un doigt pour ne pas succomber à ses charmes. Acclamé par les fidèles il jouit d'une réputation qui s'étend bien au-delà des frontières de son canton. Il fait preuve de chasteté pendant des années. Mais il sera séduit par une fille simplette amenée chez lui pour une séances de prière de guérison.

The film depicts the nuclear arms race that took place between all sides in the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War. The movie starts in 1492, in Spain. Jews are being chased everywhere. They have two choices: either to convert or to face trial and execution. Isabel (Katherine Borowitz), and Clara (Tara Fitzgerald) are growing up with terror. Although forcibly baptized, the sisters are chased through Christendom until they arrive in Venice. In Venice, Isabel organizes a secret passage in order to give refuge to the refugees who were fleeing away in the fear of the Inquisition. Isabel decides that, in order to be safe, her family must flee to Istanbul, the only place where Jews are not hated. But Clara refuses to leave, because she is in love with a Venetian named Paulo Zane (John Turturro). When Isabel somewhat tries to force Clara to move to Istanbul, Clara gets furious at the former and is almost ready to break all family ties with Isabel. In these battles of misunderstandings, Clara's young daughter Victoria (Hannah Taylor-Gordon) is trapped, who finds that she is about to be married into the same faith that murdered her own father.

With their municipality scheduled to be flooded to make way for the construction of a new dam, the devout denizens of a rural village have placed their faith in Choi Gyeong-seok, a church elder who promises to relocate the flock. Choi tells the villagers they will build a church and a new housing development where they will all be able to live together after the town is completely submerged. He also says that only 144,000 people can go to heaven, and that church offerings are mandatory if one wants to "secure their spot." Even the town's much-revered Reverend Sung, a young and good-looking minister who seemingly has the ability to heal the sick, approves of Choi's plans. Behind his guise of devotion, however, Choi is a practiced con man posing as a representative of a fake religion; his true aim is to defraud the villagers of their resettlement compensation. The only obstacle to the scheme is Kim Min-chul, a skeptical outcast who accidentally discovers evidence of Choi's past misdeeds and suddenly finds himself becoming the center of resistance against the church institution.

In a series of thematically-linked vignettes, a couple's attempts at fulfilling and consummating their romantic relationship are continually thwarted by the bourgeois values and sexual mores of family, church, and society. In the course of seeking sexual release and satisfaction, involving the man imagining an advertisement has come to life of a woman's hand rubbing herself, then later she tells her mother she hurt her finger, then a waiter at a party rubs a wine bottle in a similar fashion and the woman sublimates her sexual passion by fellating the toe of a religious statue before finally French kissing her father. The man's penchant for committing social taboos, like making love in the mud during a religious ceremony and slapping her mother, seems to excite the woman. He stumbles away from the father and daughter kiss to her bedroom where he throws a burning tree, a bishop, a plow, the bishop's staff, a giraffe statue and handfuls of pillow feathers out the window.
