Synopsis

Hideko, a young lady working as a conductor with a bus company in Kofu, Yamanashi, has an idea for her bus that could avert the dwindling number of passengers. She asks the visiting author Ikawa to write for her a commentary to the local sites that she can read out to her passengers as they travel through the countryside. Kin, the first of the geisha, is consumed by the idea of wealth. As a moneylender, she is an embittered businesswoman who is insistent upon being repaid by her former geisha sisters, Tamae and Tomi. She is the love interest of a former soldier in Manchuria, Seki, who was sent to jail after trying to commit suicide with her many years ago. He returns to try to borrow money from her, but is quickly turned away. In the end, he is sent back to jail for a money-related crime. Kin then becomes excited when she hears that Tabe, her former patron and lover, is returning. However, she becomes furious after realizing that he does not love her, but rather just wants to borrow her money as well. She kicks him out and burns his photograph to erase his memory. In the end, she leaves the city on a search for property to buy.

The story starts out with a group of young men attending school drills under the direction of Mr. Omura (Tatsuo Saito). Shinji Okajima (Tokihiko Okada) is seen goofing off, misbehaving, and upsetting his teacher. After being disciplined the drills resume and the boys eventually graduate and go out into the working world. Okajima has grown up, now has a family, and works as an insurance salesman. On the day of their annual bonuses the men are all anxious. Okajima's son (Hideo Sugawara) has his heart set on a bicycle. After receiving his bonus, Okajima writes out the list of presents he will buy for his family. A co-worker named Rou-Shain Yamada (Takeshi Sakamoto) is laid off because his last two clients died shortly after signing their policies. Upset for him Okajima gathers the other workers to go "protest at least once" to the boss but the others back down and one such worker (Isamu Yamaguchi) challenges Okajima to make the protest himself. Okajima takes the challenge. While in the office the boss is offended at the subject and the two begin a comedic fight. By the end of the fight Okajima is fired and bows as he leaves. He returns home with a scooter for his son, who is immediately disappointed and throws a tantrum. His wife Tsuma Sugako (Emiko Yaguma) returns from the market and tries to calm the boy while Choujo tells her what happened.

À la suite du décès accidentel de son époux, Kuniko Bannai doit élever seule son fils, Takeshi, un garçon de six ans fort dissipé. Or, pour son malheur, Kinuko Kakinuma, l'épouse d'un industriel, conduisant sa voiture de sport en compagnie d'un jeune amant, Ogasawara, renverse Takeshi et le blesse mortellement. Celle-ci ne veut croire qu'à un léger accident et poursuit donc sa route. Son mari, craignant de compromettre sa carrière, demande à son chauffeur de se dénoncer à la place de sa femme. D'un autre côté, le frère de Kuniko, Kōji, un petit malfrat habitué des mauvais coups, obtient, au terme d'une dure transaction, un dédommagement financier important... Mais, Kuniko n'est guère plus heureuse : « Mon fils était tout pour moi, il n'est plus là, je veux m'amuser avant de mourir », dit-elle. Toutefois, lorsqu'elle apprend la vérité, grâce à l'une de ses voisines, témoin de l'accident, un désir de vengeance s'empare d'elle. Elle rôde, désormais, autour de la demeure des Kakinuma et parvient à se faire engager chez eux comme femme de ménage.
