Jeevan Mukt (Hindi: जीवन मुक्त; translation: Freedom in Life) is a 1977 Bollywood film directed by Sudhendu Roy. This family drama stars Girish Karnad and Laxmi in the lead with support cast of Parikshit Sahani, Vidya Sinha, Suresh Oberoi, Meena Roy, Sidhir, Mala Jaggi.
The story is about Anita's quest for love, her tribulations in this process and ultimate realisation to freedom in life (aka Jeevan Mukt).

Sagar (Vinod Khanna) defies his wealthy family by marrying a poor girl named Sarita (Rekha) and therefore is cut out of his family's inheritance. He then decides to make a living by driving a cab. Sarita feels guilty that he left his wealth behind to marry her. She raises Rs.10,000 from a loan shark but lies to her husband saying she got it from her uncle. She then asks her husband to give the money to a stockbroker friend to invest. When the investment doesn't result in healthy dividends, Sarita becomes desperate to raise the money to repay the loan shark. She inadvertently gets hooked up with a madam (Nadira) who sends clients to her apartment. Sarita gets into humorous incidents as she avoids contact with her male clients.

Anoop studies law in Calcutta, while his widowed mom lives in a small town in West Bengal. He has a sister, Sudha, who is married to Anil and lives in Calcutta. Since Anoop is of marriageable age, his mom has selected a prospective bride for him in her neighbourhood. The girl's name is Vidya. When Anoop returns home, his mother asks him for his approval, but he says he wants to see the girl first. He goes to see Vidya, and also gets to meet another village belle by the name of Minoo, the daughter of Sharda and Ramchandra. He returns home, tells his mom that he cannot marry Vidya, and will marry only Minoo. His mother reluctantly agrees and the marriage takes place. It is then that they find out that Minoo has no household skills. Neither is she educated, nor mature enough to understand her relationship with Anoop. Her only interests appear to be stealing mangoes and other fruit, and playing with children much younger than her. Anoop's mom is quite exasperated with Minoo and is compelled to keep the new bride under lock and key. When the time comes for Anoop to return to Calcutta, he asks Minoo to come with him, but she refuses.

Due to his illegal activities, Anjali Gujral separates from Mahendra Pratap Gujral, and marries Dr. Malhotra. She does bring up her son, Dev from her first marriage, who grows up to become a Police Officer. Years later, on the tracks of Gujral, Dev, and his close colleague, Komal come across Suraj Singh, and find out that he is indeed Gujral. At this point Gujral decides to play on Dev's emotions by reminding of his past affection for him, and blaming his entire criminal career on a politician, Rajvansh Shashtri. Dev must now decide to go after Shastri, or disbelieve his father altogether.

Joginder Singh is a dedicated Police Commissioner. He and his wife have two sons, Vijay and Rakesh, and daughter Jyoti. One day Rakesh arrests Kalicharan, henchman of underworld kingpin Alexander. He is disturbed when he learns of Kalicharan's release after his son's appeal. As if this was not enough, Alexander himself is trapped by police and the anger against Singh reaches its climax. Alexander goes free on bail and abducts and molests Jyoti. When Singh is informed by Kalicharan's son about the tragedy, he kills a man at the scene of tragedy thinking him to be responsible.

Suraj lives a wealthy lifestyle with his Police Inspector dad, Sangram, mom, and sister, Chutki. He joins the Police Force, and is appointed a Police Inspector. Shortly after his appointment, his dad brings Suraj's paternal uncle, Jaspal Singh, who subsequently moves in with them. When the time comes for Chutki's marriage, her to-be father-in-law, a Police Officer himself, stops the marriage proceedings as he would like Sangram to remove Jaspal from the Singh's household. When Sangram refuses, the marriage is canceled. When Suraj questions this, Sangram refuses to provide any answers. That night Jaspal leaves without telling anyone. Suraj meets with and falls in love with Vanisha. Subsequently, Suraj is suspended from active duty, arrested and charged with killing a man named Anthony. A woman named Geeta comes to his rescue with evidence to prove his innocence. Subsequently, Geeta is killed, and Suraj swears to bring in the culprit at any and all costs. Little does Suraj know that his girlfriend, Vanisha, is plotting to kill him; Sangram is not his real father, and he was sired by a bandit known only as Jarnail Singh. Things get worse when Jarnail's rival, Jabhar alias Zoravar, finds out about Suraj's biological lineage and sets forth to have him killed - by any and all means possible.
